Very true. But you never ever get back the money you spend on modifying a car. Just because you spend $100,000 on a 914 does not make it a $100,000 914.

Though I do notice that people on the BBSes are just a wee bit harsh on most evil-bay listings. Not sure why...

In this case, at least for me, it was the horrible spelling.

Dave, because damnit, ebay is a hellish, rocky void, which knows no love, or understanding.

Also, the codpieces that start a 'no reserve' auction at $twentynineandahalf times the probable selling prices are weenies.

It's hard to find a buyer for a dream, one man's dream, is another's garish nightmare. Ewe! Soylent Ravenna!

haha... not really, I love Ravenna.

About the only way to get $$$$$ back on a car is to make it famous somehows such as winning Lemans or the Parade concours or an SCCA national title, etc. Then hold it for 10 to 12 years and then sell it. As for me, I figure the money I save in visits to a shrink is more than off set by the money I spend on my 914, it keeps me sane!

Ya It these cars are not really worth money to invest in unless you are like me.... I figure that i am going to keep my 914 around since in about 20 years i will hit my mid-life cirisis and if i sold it now i would just have to buy one then. I figure this way is cheeper and i get to play with it in the mean time.
Hey the AA guy, ya know good old george, bought that 916 a few years back and is now trying to sell it for nearly TRIPPLE what he originally bought it for. and that is ALOT of $$ when you consider we are talking about 6 figures here. I dont think he is going to get it any time soon though...

Unfortuante for George, we are the only people who care, and one "didn't" sell last year for under $100,000.

Any highly modified, high end sports car is not a great investment. Unless like John R said, it's got some notoriety, history, or whatever makes it worth more.

However if you want a great car with a big displacement 911 engine, and all the suspension, brakes, transmission, exhaust, (blah, blah, blah), it's going to cost you some serious money.

If you build a car from the ground up, with all of the goodies, you're getting well into Boxster/BoxsterS money. So you know what you are getting into well before you start writing checks. Also add the fact that a custom 914-6 costs more to build than a 911.

Where I'm going with this is, that there are a few guys out there with enough money and love of 914's that a few cars sell in the $30,000+ range. Shoot, doing a full restoration on a 2.0 is going to cost you $20,000.

The bottom line is when the the other guy, who's just as crazy; buys the car.

Guilty as charged! Have to add that due to a busy schedule (mostly commuting) and getting older (body, not heart or mind!) I couldn't do one from the ground up anymore as some of my previous projects - so there are a few of us that will purchase highly modified as a baseline and do some of the easier stuff ourselves. Let's face it, big horsepower, mid-engine, lightweight cars are the way to go, and having one that turns heads is an added benefit. I can't tell you how many times people have stopped and asked 'what kind of car is that?' followed by the usual ahs and oohs. Wow, are 914's really that old?
Sure wish I had time to build and tinker with cars like I used to... maybe at retirement!

Anytime e(vil)Bay is mentioned - we all have to realize it truly is the buyer matching up with the seller. Some days the person with the expendable money is looking for something special, and that same day someone might be selling it on eBay. It's not about price and value, it's about desire and opportunity (for these specialty items).
