Almost Done!!!

Well, it has been a long journey to get where I am now. It goes tomorrow to the muffler shop to get the exhaust system custom made and installed. Here are some pictures of what it started out as and progress along the way to where it is now. With any luck, it will breathe life this weekend. I am interested to hear any suggestions and comments. Feel free to speak up.

skline that looks awsome. You should be real proud. Would there be any problem with CV joints with the axle being so pushe back?

skline, looks great! It's obvious that took a lot work. How long has been since you started? I'm going on 10 months and still have a long, long way. Your pictures are great motivation. Thanks

The first picture (Non digital) shows the date as 9-2-2001. So it has been a very long time. I have really only been actively working on it for just over 2 years. I had another one that took a lot of my time. It was sold last spring and since then, I have been focussed on this one. The time is coming very soon. Its at the muffler shop right now getting fitted with an exhaust system. They do a lot of custom hot rods and race cars so I let him do what he wanted to do to the car. He is going with a Camaro type dual in dual out muffler mounted in the rear. I told him I wanted it to be fairly quiet. It fell off the trailer as we were unloading it so now I have to fix where it chipped the rear fender and fix a leak at the brake line in the same area. I will take pictures of it when I get it back later today and post them.

How are you going to do the exhaust? Under or loop over the axles? What kind of mufflers? I like my Magnaflows. Oil pump primed and leak check? Watch those plug wires to your headers - good wire loom?
Double-check your clutch fork adjustment. Watch the clearance of your exhaust to your starter motor. I probably got more things... email me if you want. I just recently been through this. Good luck!
The guy at the muffler shop is going to run the pipes under like the factory H/E are with a single dual in dual out Camaro muffler. I wanted it quiet. I will be running the plug wires using a loom that bolts to the valve covers and holds the wires in place very well. The engine does not even have oil in it yet, just assembley lube on everything. I am running a high torque starter and with the pipes running low I shouldnt have a problem with that. The clutch seems to be ok but I will double check everything again before I run the car. I will do a pre oil prime on it before I start it. Thanks for the advice though. If you think of anything else, post it. I wont be starting it till this weekend at the earliest.

Ok, here are the exhaust pictures, I am very pleased with how it came out. First is a picture of this morning on the trailer before the muffler. The second is after, can you tell the difference? The third one is the underside. I can hardly wait to hear it run now. Saturday is the soonest I can do anything more on it. Too much work tomorrow.

Came out clean. You be sure to let us know how you like the sound of that muffler. Do the axles clear the pipes if you raise the car? Maybe some other things to check: keep the fuel lines as far as possible from the engine and headers. I slipped some armaflex tube insulation over mine (not the cheap polystyrene stuff) to keep the fuel line cool. Check the heat radiated off the exhaust over to your fuel pump. When the car is not moving (no air movement) then things can heat up and potential vapor lock. I got advice to drill holes in the thermostat. This helps bleed air out, but only drill one if you do it. I had 4 small holes and then it took a long time for my engine to heat up. I'm down to one and it still takes a while. Make sure all your metal fittings for hoses have a lip or rolled edge to capture the hose clamp. Don't want hoses to blow off. Just use water the first time to leak test, put in anti-freeze later. Will you be able to see your timing mark? Maybe I can think of some more stuff.

Well, here is what it looks like after the weekend of interuptions. I am still working on the wiring. The front where I put the battery is mostly done, once tested, I will mount the battery and clean up the wiring. The back is where I am at now trying to figure out where all the wires go and how to wire them.

Well, it's not as close to being done as I want, I tried to start it last night and it backfired and didnt start, I am guessing that the timing is way off. On the good side, it backfired and that means I am getting spark and fuel. I didnt get a chance to work on it today and probably wont tomorrow but hopefully this week I will get her fired up.
