Gas Eberspacher Heater for 914s
Last year, I had my heating system out and when late fall came I nearly froze to death coming back from the FFC.
I feel like the stock system (in my case) is pretty cobbled together and therefore I have decided on converting to the gas heater. Does anyone have one or know where I could get one? b

Get the factory parts with SSI HE's as that will cook you out!
Ya don't need a gas heater, besides the ones I have had stink.

I have SSI HE's. I cant get the damn parts to fit right, and yes theyre on thr right side.
I wouldnt be surprised if these parts were type3 parts or some crap like that. Gas smell or Oil smell? I choose gas now.

I picked up Gas Eberspacher Heater from a 66 912 this summer with the intention of installing it into my car, My only other option was to spring for the 6 headers from Patrick for about the price of a nice 914.
I have been warned of possible fire dangers using it and others say they work fine. Back in the day I remember my friends bug had one and it cranked out the heat. Porsche did install these things into there cars how bad and unsafe can they really be.

I think people freak out by the simple fact that these cars now have yet another fuel line, with the install of a seperate heater. There are *ALOT* of safety mechanisms in place to lower the risk of fire. The *ONLY* downside to not having stock heat is that if, during a warm morning, you need defrost, you will not have it. The heater only turns on when cold outside.
Not sure how "cold" cold is but I believe its fall temps. Just maintence. b

I've never been able to get the defrost to really work like it should - those muggy summer rains = towel wiping down inside of windshield... And I've got SS exchangers, working flapper boxes, and blower fan.

Britt, make sure the little flappers on the bottom of the impeller housing are working properly. If they don't open, you don't get heat. They are soft aluminum and easy to deform.
If you want heat from the stock HE's you've got to keep the engine wound up. If you keep it spooled up above 3500 rpm you should get plenty of heat. Drive 'er down to Parsons, I'll get you fixed up! |

Do like I did . Install a heater in my 904 kit car, so I chose
to modify a oil cooler to a heater, Enclose it in a metal box and installed a 3 speed fan motor and connected to the duct work. Presto HEAT. |

My heater will cook you outta the cabin! SSI, with stock parts so I don't know why people complain so much.
On cold frosty mornings, it defrosts the windshield in one block, warms the cabin in 3 to 4 and cooks me out in 10 minutes. I live in Seattle so we have lots of wet crappy rainey days, where the moisture forms on the inside as much as the outside of the windshield.

I really would liek the stock system to work again, but the parts I have suck and they're all greasy and whatnot.
I'll take a weekend and do some car work, and buy a bucket of Chemtool b

*every* Eberspächer and Webasto unit i ever owned came with a thermostat that *you* would set to whatever temperature you want as well as a timer so you can set it to half an hour before you need to leave in the morning and your car would be all warm and fuzzy on the inside ... Andy
