Tony's Subaru conversion Pelican parts edition
Today I took the car over to get the exhaust welded up and installed. Since Saturday when I first drove it, I made some adjustments to the shifter which helped a great deal. It shifts really well now and I'm quite happy with it. The side-side bearing falls out easily but that will be an easy fix.
I have to say that having the shifter up high and with a bit shorter throw makes for a really slick setup. The cool thing about the shifter I built is that I can change the throw ratio at the transmission. cable shifting is the way to go ![]() So the exhaust system is getting partially built today. It will be a pair of mufflers, one for each pair of cylinders. Later on I will add a balance pipe, and also exhaust tips. For now though, this will get me on the road so I can test cooling, etc. Also I have to modify the rear trunk slightly to fit exhaust tips. Jes (wife) picked up an O2 sensor for me yesterday at a Subaru dealership and once I get the car back (probably tomorrow) I will isntall that and I should be able to get out of limp-home mode. Even in limp-home mode the car is a LOT faster than with the 1.7 It delivers power so smoothly, really a nice engine. -Tony

Tony, go to google and type in Walker's Subaru. They are located in Renton Washington. They have unbielable internet pricing... Ask for Gary. You can save up to 50% on some items.
Keith btw... great news on the runner! |

Drive on up!! Can't wait to see it.
Congrats on all the hard work and effort paying off.

Congrats Tony!!!
I am really excited to see your exhaust setup. For the cable shifter, can you switch to some sort of captive bearing for the side to side instead of using the clamp you have? Did I tell you I am making plans to come down for GAF? Wow, Pelican Parts... Reminds me of old times..

Congratulations
Good stuff Tony. I know I and alot of others have been following you progress and engineering feats closely. IThe cable shifter setup amazes me. 'm absolutely impressed. You've gotta be thrilled.
Hopefully I'll have the W9R1 on the road soon. Waiting on odds/ends nuts/bolts/gaskets to put the FI/intake and exhaust manifolds back together. Stopped to have all of the brackets for A/C, alternator, water pipe, and intake power coated, and exhaust headers heat coated. Took the plunge and went with Perrin fuel rails to eliminate the aggravating FI setup, and a Cobb main pulley. The 2003 WRX engine was a 30k mile michigan donor with lots of salt and oxidation, but otherwise great shape. Just bled the brakes an put the wheels back on. Engine install is about the only thing left (that's not been touched.) All the wiring looks like a done deal. Ed http://community.webshots.com/user/fat73

You are definitely putting more bling into your project than I am
Of course the reason I'm not doing that isn' because I don't want to, I'm just too excited to drive the damn thing and can't afford it. Once I get the cable shifter working really well and reliable I will put up information on the 914club in a seperate thread. There are a lot of people who want to do a cable shifter setup and I really think its a good way to go. So far I haven't seen another side shifter 901 converted for cable use, and actually installed and working in a car. Can't wait to see video of your car Ed, soudns like its going to be a blast. -Tony

Joe: I'll drive it up soon. Maybe this weekend. I go tomorrow morning before work to pick it up from the muffler shop and then tomorrow night I'm going to wire in the O2 sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, and the sensor simulator box. At that point it should be fairly solid to drive up to your neck of the woods. (unless the coolant temps get too high)
Jeff: AWESOME! regarding the bearing I am planning on either machining a bearing holder that is really a lot better, or replacing the bearing with bushings mounted in a block of aluminum. Several options, need to figure out the best way. -Tony

Cable Shifter Question
Tony...
Once you get the get the cable shifter completed, would that be something that would work easily with a 915 tranny, or a G50? Trannys are a definite weak spot for me. That's the one can of worms I've never opened. Ed

Update: Got the car back from the exhaust shop today. Tonight I'll wire up the O2 sensor, the Vehicle Speed sensor and the sensor simulator box. Then try and clear any CEL codes that may be keeping the engine in limp-home mode.
The cable shifter setup I made will only work for a 901. There are similar ways though for doing a conversion on a 915 or G50. There was a thread recently about 915 cable shifters, and that so far only one or two people ahve done it. -Tony
