Well, I do System Admin for a company called Energy Logics Inc. I like it because I never do the same job twice(unless I foul it up), My boss doesn't know how to do my job so he doesn't bug me, I'm learning as I go so it's always interesting, good profit sharing, good hours, basically a dream job for someone that likes to tinker with computers. Plus I'm only 19 so I get paid decently and I don't have to many bills wich equates to more money for toys.

Oh, what the heck.
By day, mild-mannered computer programmer. I do Cockpit Graphics for a NASA flight simulator. Pluses: Neat work. Airplanes and pictures and computers? Oh my!! Plus some people are easily impressed by the "I work for NASA" schtick. Minuses: Red tape. That, and I've been doing the same job for 13+ years, so it's gotten a bit boring. And I almost get paid enough to earn a decent living. Can't afford a house in the SF Bay Area, though. By night, 914 action hero! ![]() Pluses: Up to my eyeballs in 914 information. Comes in handy for Tech Quizzes and things like that. I get to help people sometimes. I get to feel like a big shot. And, of course, I get the *****in' employee discount! Minuses: The pay--I think all of my pay has gone into parts from Pelican! The time--I don't have hardly any time to actually work on my own car!! And the perpetually-incipient carpal tunnel from always being on the computer. --DD |

OK, My turn
Manage a restaurant in Bee-Yoo-Tee-Full Coronado, CA. Pluses= Great guests, always tons of work, work mostly nights so I've got plenty of daytime hours for tinkering on my '74 2.0 rustmobile and restoring the '72 1.7 (rust-free and just back from the paint shop Monday) Minuses= Employees that require too much care(I've got a 6 year old at home, why the hell would want 65 more?), Work mostly weekends so I don't get to spend nearly enough time with the wife and kid (or getting a chance to autoX. That's on the agenda someday... ) Like previously stated, it's nice to see what a interesting slice of the populace fellow 'teeners are! ------------------ Herb |

Lessee, retired US Naval officer, ex Senior Engineer for a DC consulting company, ex Oracle custom application developer (for Oracle), currently in architectural school. I guess it took a while to determine what I wanted to be when I grow up.
Herb, I'm coming to Coronado on the 27th of December (arriving for a retirement of one of the greatest SEAL officers I've ever met), and would like to meet you at your establishment. Drop me an e-mail telling me the restaurant, and I'll be sure to drop in and say hello. |

Besides being a 914 nut for 5 years, I have run a small construction company for let's see now, 25 years. Yikes! Out of school, I was a photographer for a few years too. Now I enjoy taking pictures of my car! I am 48 years old, put my way through school working on VW's out of a garage! I have always worked on cars for fun. Lots of engine rebuilding from VW's to Ford big blocks, plus all the other typical stuff too. I really like the various people on these lists and what they have to say.
pluses- the people in construction are great, some clients are too, I set my own hours, every job is different....sometimes the pay is great! minuses- clients! and the long hours at times..deadlines...and some Architects! Geoff 76 914 2.0L always being restored and further refined. (actually it runs great and is a chick magnet, "oh, your car is sooo cute and the roof comes off?) |

I am a marketing manager for a large telecom service and equipment provider. Also a DAD to two little girls ( big problem only one daughter at a time in the 914!). Those are the two big jobs! One earns the other spends. Great industry and job..however, big company = lots of red tape... I am a 38 year old certified air cool junkie. 23 years of german airsuckers...The 914 is the new diversion. although you might not see norustscott on the board, I do benifit greatly from the boards banter and expertise. scott gregory Maryland 1962 sunroof bug 1973 2.0l 914 1990 vanagon carat 1988 vw fox...190K note: nothing works past teh engine and brakes.lol |

What a diverse group of 914 enthusiasts. I am a professional firefighter in California with 26 years on the job. The rewards are in the faces of people that we help and the rush that comes from running into a burning building that everyone else has just run out of! The 914 is just my hobby car and I prefer to keep it very close to stock.

it's really nice to see so many responses and know a little more about the people that the great 914 tips and info are coming from.
compared to what the rest of you put, i have hardly any info up... i'm a computer science major. When i am not working on my homework or gathering info for my 914 i am stocking books at Hastings. the plusses to stocking books: I get a great discount on computer science related books, car books, (books in general), good discount on new cds, i get to keep up with all the new music coming out, release dates, etc... everyone i work with is great! minuses to stocking books? i have to put them on the shelf and can't stop to read the whole thing. I find way too many interesting books while i am at work, and that if i want porsche parts i can't buy the books. thank you again to all that replied! |

I'll play...
I recently changed gig's on Nov 15 - OLD GIG: Corporate credit guy for Volant Sports (Volant Skis, Agression and Limited Snowboards and Yeti Cycles). Was there for exactly 10 years. +'s = great people, LOTS of ski time, access to really good toys, some fun travel destinations, getting to work with some of my childhood heros (the Mahres, JC Killy, P Ortlieb, Picabo). -'s = It turned skiing into a job vs. a fun activity, the industry is wreckless in it's business practices and can be based more on style than on substance (especially the snowboard side). Very incestual - everyone is married to, divorced from, related to, has worked with or are just sleeping with everybody else. NEW GIG: Same work, new company. I am now the credit guy for Schwinn/GT Bicycles. Don't know about the + and - yet! SIDE GIG: I am a musicain with a Denver based band called Exit 232 (exit232.com). We play 3 weekends a month, some cover shows, some original shows. TONS of fun. BEFORE I FORGET - don't have access to a great deal of internet time this week, sooo... HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!!! Okay here it goes. I am a Green Beret (Special Forces). I have 15 years in the Army, 11 and some change in SF. I also have a small VW shop on the side with an old friend.
Pros: I have been all over the world (Africa primarily), speak a couple of languages, seen some incredibly beautiful women and places of course, shot a bunch of weapons and bullets, eaten interesting food, and been to the Porsche Factory twice. Cons: I have also been stuck in places you might think were hell, angered a couple of Arab soldiers because I was wearing a Swiss Watch even though I was speaking perfect Arabic and having a good time, drinking tea, moments earlier in a tent in the middle of the desert, seen some horrible places and women, had my weapon jam, eaten some inedible food, and ran out of beer. So you see this is a great job. I am away from home 8-9 months out of the year and my 914's and other projects have to wait until I return and that just plain sucks! |

Tech Writer and training developer for a small consulting outfit. Pluses: learn about lots of stuff, chemical processing, paper making, health insurance, pharmeceutical processing, oil refining, plastics manufacture... Minuses: travel a lot, where's the next contract coming from, regulatory requirements, OSHA, EPA, FDA, ISO, etc. etc. etc... Previously, 15 years with GE Aerospace, started as an electronics assembler and worked up to manufacturing/process engineer Happy Holidays, Harvey Hoover [This message has been edited by HarveyH (edited 12-18-2000).] |
