I am a 25yr old kitchen designer. I also install kitchens, and some light re-modeling on the side. Love to work on cars! Don't know how but my friend and fellow co-woker talked me into changing the clutch in his 1988 suburban today. What a pain in the a%#. I think I will stick to 914's. :V

Good evening, everybody. In my "other" life
I drive something which isn't quite as nimble
as a 914. I'm a locomotive engineer for the
Santa Fe, running trains between Belen, NM and Winslow, AZ. The primary +'s are that
the pay is pretty good, and the people are
(for the most part!) a lot of fun to work
with. The primary -'s are the goofy hours and the lack of anything which even remotely resembles a normal schedule. My wife is also an engineer, and we have no kids, so it generally works out OK for us, but I sure wouldn't recommend it to anybody with children. It is also really tough to be able to commit to doing things with the local club (Roadrunner Region). Despite the odd hours, tho, I have had a fair amount of time to start work (dismantling) on the
"project" - a '73. Long term plans are a 2.4 or 3.0, steel flares, big brakes, new suspension, and...and...and...Sound familiar?
Well, that's probably enough from me. Take care, all.

OK, now it is my turn...

7 days a week I'm the owner, operator and slave of a leading type 4/914 engine shop, Aircooled Technology.

I cannot think of one negaitive, other than fighting battles with new parts and being backlogged for 3 months.

I love my job, my business, and my life, there is nothing like firing up a new beast, and feeling the ground shake....no matter if I have 20 hour days, or not...I LOVE IT!!

I think we should all start this post out as " Hi, I'm FILL IN NAME HERE.. and I'm a porscheholic" as the group says "HI...FILLED IN NAME" Somehow I don't think any of us want a 12 step process though! Brian

Thanks for kicking this post back up! I never saw it the first time, but now feel compelled to add my name to the list.

Like a few others I am architect turned 3d computer artist / graphics / animation / small business owner (www.studio2a.net). Architecture was fun, but too much work, and little pay working for the man all day. Working for yourself is the best!

I have a newly rebuilt 76 2.0L that I am now enjoying for the first time in almost 2 years. Also a 91 vw golf that I can't seem to part with.

I'm a 66 year old retired law enforcement officer. Before playing cops and robbers I started my working life in my teens as a photographer, spent 12 years doing that. Then I spent 10 years in management of air conditioning/heating manufacture and distribution. But best of all my entire life, with the exception of the first 10 years, has been filled with the love of cars. I have a '73 914, a '61 Austin Healey Sprite, a '60 Austin Healey 3000, a '91 Jaguar SX6 and a '94 Saturn SL2. Guess you could say I'm a collector of fine cars too.
Likes and dislikes? I've loved it all.

Likes the respect around town, good to better $ for the time spent working, enjoyed 8 years of college, helping people with something they value. frequently get called to testify in legal cases and get to do eyeexams in Maximum Security Prisons

Dislikes- gotta keep my hands clean after working on my 914, nobody likes a greasy finger holding their contact lenses, heaps of paperwork, from insurance companies to get my $,

Pizza Restaurant Owner

Yes I own a pizza store! I have just one independent store! Benefits- I love pizza!!! I get to see alot of interesting people. I get to work nonstop 6 days a week & put up with wonderful employees. These employees are completely underpaid as they put it. Yet they do seem to make more per hour than myself! Huh?
Oh yeah I guess thats a drawback huh? Actually I love my job!
Why I ask myself alot!! It does provide for my family (wife, Twin daughters & son). I also have had my 73 914 2.0 for about nine months. I have invested about 7grand into it & my wife has'nt left me yet!!! So I guess I'm in good shape

Hey, jadams, I stopped by your work a couple of years ago... NASA-Ames was starting to run several JSF simulations, and we needed to talk to some of your sim gurus. Drove past the big buildings where you guys put the F-16s together; I just wish I had gotten the chance to see them being built.

Here Goes My 2 cents. I am a Master Mechanic for a major Pipeline construction firm in Houston Tx. I have been doing that for 26 years. And have worked in every state in the U.S. And have worked in the middle East, South America, The Far East. And Even Russia. I work on the average of 9 months of the year in the Pipeline industry. And average over 100 hours a week when working. Drawbacks Many Many hours in places that arn't always nice. Advantages $$$$$$$ That has allowed Me to have a very well equiped shop. How many Hobby/Businesses that has a CNC Milling Machine! My Hobby/Business is fabricating parts for Harley Davidson race bikes, I just recently got into the 914's as I have wanted one ever since I laid My eyes on My first one in 1970. Well now I can finely afford one. But alas I don't have anytime to work on it. I am really amazed at the diversitiy of the people involved with the 914.

Make my own schedule; work a lot in Spring, Summer and Fall. Go figuere, they need the windows in the winter (even here with the high natural gas prices). Currently building a '73 2.0 race car.

I am a High School Math Teacher. I have the joy of trying to teach young people about such wonderful things as Calculus and Trigonometry. I spent the first ten years also teaching computer skills ranging from programming to "this is a computer..."

Pluses- I get to be around lots of very different people.

Minuses- There are so many...mainly the "bend over and take it" attitude we get from the "not-so-educated" decision makers in our profession.

First car experience was a beautiful 1977 Toyota Celica. I couldn't kill it. Even though it was my guinea pig for learning about the mechanics of cars.

I've had my 914 for 11 years now. There aren't too many bolts that I haven't held in my hands. I'm sure that there are many who can say the same thing. My wife feels that I love this car more than her. Not quite, but close.

I'm a Project Manager for a general contractor. I've been involved with office buildings, warehouses, hospitals, a jail, a prision, shopping centers, schools, a food court, parking garages, an apartment complex, a hotel at Disney World, and a bunch of other projects.
+'s= Always building something new, and when I'm done I can look at it and say that was mine.
-'s= I was layed off on friday so I looking for a job.

I've had my 914 since 1979. Bought it when I was 20 years old. Traded my '70 bug and $1000 in cash. Drove it as my only car for about 8 years. Now it is a track/autocross only car. Going to the PCA race at Sebring this weekend.

The "URY" in my user name is from my last name, Woodbury. When I say my name for someone to write down, they always ask "b-e-r-y" and I say "U-R-Y".

Look at my user name, I have been in the hair bussness for 40 years, now just sell and service hair replacements. Part time 20 hrs. aweek. I have been blessed. 20 yrs. ago I volunteered Coaching baseball for the Special Olympics, and I got hooked. Now I work full time in a sheltered workshop for Adults with Mental Retardation. We Train them to be self - sufficient, and employed in the commiunity, and to live independently. Words can not describe the feeling you get from beening a part of, and seening this process evolve. THAT IS WHERE IS WHERE MY HEART IS. In 15 months I retire , and go back to the hair thing fulltime.

Porsche Crest What do I do?

Profession: Light Infantry Fire Team Leader (Army)

The cool part: I get to blow ***** up, shoot machine guns, kick down doors, run around breaking things, yell at people, practice ju-jitsu on work hours, and risk my life to save freedom (and remind my wife of that fact when I need leverage).

The uncool part: I get to babysit 18 year olds, work with more than my fair share of morons, the hours absolutely suck, and it's terrible on the body.

All in all, I think everyone should do it for four years, I'm proud as hell, but it drives me up a wall and I think I'll be going crazy any time now. I recommend it.

Profession: IT Project Manager

Pluses: Great pay! Get to develop systems that use latest computer technology. Amazingly, get to meet a lot of guys that are also into sports cars (not all of them work on thir cars though). Also, all the free office supplies I could ever need (I work for an office supplies company).

Minuses: Looooonnnnngggg boring meetings sometimes. Deadlines that are created by users that think that systems are automagically created by flipping a switch.

On the side: A true 914 enthusiast. Learned how to drive stick on my cousins 75 914 back in 82'. Was destined to own one one day. Bought an Orange 75 1.8 about 7 years ago. Did the 5 lug conversion and every other mod possible. Now seriously considering a six conversion (very seriously).

Current delimna: Needed a car for growing family so agreed to let wife buy her minivan (yuk! - at least it's got a DVD player). Hey, it can come in handy for moving Porsche parts I guess. Anyway, she agreed that after the Honda is paid off, I can get my 911. Note for future reference: Make sure that wife acknowledges that YES a 911 is in fact a 4-seater and can accomodate two adults and two young kids (besides told her that son will inherit 914 and daughter will get 911 - or maybe the other way around). Anyway, (wait for this) currently making 1K minivan payments every month (not kidding). Here's the real delimna. Should I convert to a 914/6 first or pick up a 911 (which one too). I've always liked 911's but 914/6's (3.0 and 3.2's at least) are constantly on my mine. Drove in one once and still can't get over the handling and raw power of these conversions. Anyway, doing lot's of research on 911's and 911 engines for now. Anybody else ever make one of these deals with their wife?

Machine parts inspector for a great metropolitan airplane builder.
Yes, kiddies, chances are that airplane that you're flying on contains some parts that passed thru my grubbies........MUhahahahah. Them parts were OK.....really, trust me.
If not "OK" they were prolly PFCE, I think.
