70 with 2.4 bought it last week

I think this is a keeper. Lots of nice extras and needs some finishing, hopefully will get some help here on the forum.

Any Santa Cruz 914's out there?

Cheers
Tim

This was the last 914 I did back in the early 90's It was very quick.

This is my new project

Took several weeks fixing hacked wiring, getting the DPD air working and all the little usual things. 1.8 smooth as butter but needs more power. I want to keep it FI. Doing alot of reading to figure out what to do. I also have a 1980 Vanagon 2.0 motor sitting around.
I have a 59 Ghia being restored and a 72 Hippie bus to haul stuff around. Bus is a 1.7 that had hydrolic lifter put in during its rebuild and wheezes out but runs like a top. Need more ponies there too. I am thinking of taking which ever motor is left and converting it for the Ghia.

Any suggestions for what motor needs what and which car it should go in would be appreciated. Keeping the 914 around 100hp would be fine as it will be my daily driver. I just sold my Trans Am WS6 so I am having a little HP withdrawal LOL

If the Vanagon engine is still all air-cooled (I don't remember when they went Wasserboxer), it will have the "square" exhaust port heads. The only exhausts you'll find for using those on a 914 will be tuned headers with stub pipes that attach to the heads. I have heard talk over the years that the square ports have more room to modify things than the oval ports, but you do have to know what you're doing!

The Vanagon oil filler and dipstick will not be useable in the 914, unless you cut holes in the engine tin, engine shelf, and probably the firewall as well. The filler would end up roughly where the driver's lower back is. You can drill the case for the 914 dipstick (measure carefully!) and block off the hole where the filler goes. But I thin the 1980 Vanagons have the cast-over oil breather tower, so you would have to cut that off in order to use the 914-style oil filler.

Save the Vanagon motor for the Bus. Keep it pretty stock and enjoy lots of low-end torque. The Ghia would be my second choice for it, after doing an upright fan conversion on it.

For the 914, rebuild the 914's motor. You can go to any displacement on it, with little or no more work than any other. Keep it mild, though, for the injection. Just swapping 96mm P&Cs (get the kit specifically for the 1.8!) will get you 1911cc, which is nice, and you can bump the compression a half-point or maybe a bit more, if you're OK with using mid-grade or premium fuel. That should wake it up. For more $$, you can change out the crank and rods for the 2.0 versions, giving you 5mm more stroke. In that case, you need the 96mm P&C set for the 2.0, and you wind up with 2056cc of displacement. With whatever compression ratio you choose to run.

The stock 1.8 heads should support that kind of increase at least moderately well, so you don't have to mess with those unless you really want to. (The cam is a significant limit, and you don't want to change that if you're sticking with stock-type EFI.)

I know one or two people who have run 2056es on unmodified L-jet and claim no problems. I'd monitor with a wide-band O2 meter, just to be sure.

You can go bigger, but things do start getting more complex. And expensive.

My son and I are starting a 4yr rebuild of a '74 914. Not as pretty as yours (yet)!

Check out his blog: https://my914rebuild.wordpress.com

I will upload photos as soon as I figure that part out!

I see you're in Wisconsin. What type of track activities to you have planned? I'm up in Minneapolis and run a 914-6 in vintage events. With the exception of the last year I've made it to Road America 2-3 times/year with it.

Vintage 914racer, Hi, will attend Chicago's Road America DE's first (haven't been there in a few years). Blackhawk farms and I love driving the Autobahn. Will auto-x again in the local events, so vintage racing will be something to look at. I'm getting a little old for hard core racing, will be just for the of fun driving and seeing a lot of cool old cars. Probably one more year in the rebuild process, 2007 Cayman S will have to fill the void. Any suggestions on where to star with vintage events. Best, Mark

I've heard that Midwest Council runs some pretty low key vintage events at Blackhawk a few times a year. I've regularly run the July intake races (Hawk, Kic, Bric and other iterations) and the fall festival in September. The latter is much more low key than the July event and a lot more track time. I'm also involved with a MN based club that runs a couple events at Brainerd International Raceway. It's a bit of s haul from you in sure, but a casual event to get your toes wet.

Son took the 914 down to Fort Clinch in Fernandina, FL for some pictures along the drive headed into the fort. It is an amazingly beautiful drive. Every March the Eight Flags Road Tour, part of the Amelia Island Concours, makes it way down this lane on their way to the fort for a tour. It is a three mile, tree lined lane that winds it way towards the beach... gorgeous! A few years ago, Mercedes filmed a commercial there with the new SLR and three original 300 SLs; two coupes and a SLR. Luckily, we were there and got some great pics. I will have to dig them up.

If you are in the area come Friday, March 11, around 10 AM-ish, make your way to the Fort Clinch entrance and enjoy a beautiful line of Concours competitors as they do with their cars what they were meant for... DRIVING! Then head to downtown Fernandina at lunch time for a free show of the Road Tour vehicles. It is a great time!!!!! I have a great picture of my son sitting with Sir Stirling Moss at the Fort as he was holding court and telling stories... PRICELESS!

For that matter, if you are in the area, come on out to the Ritz on Saturday, the 12th, for the Cars and Coffee at the Concours. It is free for spectators! It will run from 9 AM to 1 PM. A great collection of "mere mortal" drivers from all over. You never know who you may run into. Last year I got to introduce my son and his friend (a BMW nut) to Brian Redman. Good chance that Hans J. Stuck (this year's Honoree) will be mingling among the cars. Come on out and enjoy.
