Whatever it is called, falling off into your transmission with its associated roll pin bits would be bad.

It's kind of interesting. In my tail shift 6 tranny, the 2 roll pins are such that if either fails, you will lose the ability to shift the tranny, but nothing else will happen.
If that roll pin had continued to fail, not only would you have lost the ability to shift, but the "Comb" or "Rake" could interact with the output shaft. Hmmmmm. I think I'll make this a punch out and check item! James

the thing is they can just sort of fail over time. adjust to get it in 1st, no r, or first keeps on going away. i would think these items would be a must on a tranny rehab.

Of most of the tranny's I've pulled apart, I've only come across 1 roll pin that was broken. Of course, it was in the Tranny I was using on the "blond"!

James -
That looks like a pretty slick setup. Hmmm. I know even through my 914/6 tail shifter is sloppy, with the way I align the shifter to the shiftrod, I can always tell which gear is which. I'm doing a side shift conversion on my tranny this weekend. I'm just yanking the gear stack out and changing the shift forks, so I'm maintaining the original gears, etc. I'll post pictures, etc on how it goes. James

I thought I would post to this thread, it seems to be the closest I could find to my issue. I need to know how I put this darn thing back in. My first attempt left the shifter immobile ( nothing was forced). Just wiggled it up in there nice and easy. The tranny was in neutral when I took it out. I need to know how to line up the fingers or rake as Dave calls it. Whats the secret? I would appreciate any help.
Thanks DK 1973 1.7

Did you take it apart?
I expect that when you installed and tightened the shift console, the "rake" didn't line up in the fork slots. I'd take the nuts off and pull it out and re-install, makeing sure that the rake can move in and out. If you pulled apart the shaft to replace the shaft seal, make sure that you put it back together properly. There are 4 ways, but only 1 is correct. The teeth should point in the same direction as the shift ball (17). And the rake (14) the longer part should point towards the colsole (10). On the transmission of a side shifter, the alignment portion is entirely on the shift forks, not on the shift console. When you pull the console back out, look inside the hole. You will see the shafts for each fork (parts 1,2&3). Make sure that it is in neutral by verifying that the slots in the shafts are lined up. If not, use a large screw driver to line them up. It take a bit of force to move them. Oh, and if you put 2 in gear, it locks the transmission up.

Thanks for getting back to me Red.
1) Yes, I did take it apart to replace the seal. 2) I took pictures and was dilligent putting it back together exactaly the way I took it apart. 3) I have removed it already. 4) The lining up the shift rods is very usefull info, I wondered if it really was in neutral. Thanks Red you got my vote. I'll look forward to seeing you on the ballot ![]() DK |
