914 2.0 Rebuild
It's time to do a rebuild. Need some advice on what to replace and with what. leaving the car mostly stock. Its a 73 with the fuel injection in tact. Smoking heavily on deceleration. While i am in there i am rebuilding the heads and replacing the pistons with a euro version....any suggestions.
I guess what i am asking is aside from replacing with the same.....what is the standard upgrade, leaving the stock fuel injection... thanks in advance. BTW i am using advice previously given here by replacing headers and exhaust with tangerine......... Thank you! |

How do you use the car? What would you like to improve upon with the rebuild? What kind of budget are you working with. I agree that the Raby stuff is very nice, but maybe its not what you need for your application. Do you compete with the car and need to adhere to certain rules?

This is an unmolested 73, looking for a few more horses, dont want to screw up the drivability. and since i am doing the rebuild i thought the pistons would be the way to go. I have no intention to change the fuel injection or anything else for that matter........maybe a oil cooler and improved valve springs........
Looking for the common upgrades when rebuilding. |

I haven't used their stuff but I do admire it. Lots of folks on www.914club.com and www.914world.com can also comment on their stuff.
If a truly unmolested car, in great shape, I would do a factory rebuild or, as you mention, the Euro upgrade. After that, its not so "unmolested" in my opinion.

no one but your right foot would know you changed the cam and P & C's you will still have your d jet and everything it entails
I have one of Jake's kits, it was very easy to assemble. if your going to use the tangerine exhaust your not keeping it original anyways. send jake an email, if for nothing more than his professional opinion, then call FAT, and everybody else who builds type 4's and see what info you get. my bet is they will say 96 p and c's and an aftermarket cam |

When talking to people be sure to tell them where you are. Being at our altitude has it's own unique set of variables that influence how the car runs and behaves. I personally like the Euro P&C's because they help us get back closer to stock power levels. I've also got an Elgin cam in mine, but it's a cam for the Webers that are on it.
Also add Al Johnson in Grand Junction to your list of people to consult with on what approach to take. He's been at it longer than many of us have been alive and knows the 914's very well.
