Cooling problem

Both fans come on as they are supposed to, but they don't seem to cool the engine. The temp goes back to the second mark, and then quickly back to the third mark and stays there. The temp gauge also goes up when the lights are on. Is the gauge bad?

The antifreeze looks good, and the relays are about a month old.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

And how about when you are cruising?
Mineīs remain at the first mark, when you are more or less above 50 mph.
Iīve noticed that when car is stopped or slow, temperature grows high...Fans start at bout third mark, temp then downs a bit,but sooner when fans are off grows rapidly.
Can you take note of how much time fans are on?

Iīve see that 944 engines are a very efficient heater machines...

Only thing i cannot explain is when you put in the lights...dunno

This happens when cruising too. Temp used to drop and stay low when cruising.

thatīs not good...donīt you hear strange noises when engine is very hot? If there are no leaks and water level is ok,and engine runs good,i assume is the gauge...that thing that happens when you turn lights on seems to be gauge problem.

Since I have little knowledge about electricity i cannot help you more...sorry

There are no strange noises, and the engine runs great otherwise.
Thanx for the help so far.

Send a message via ICQ to ae1969
You may have to bleed the system again. Its fairly easy to get large air pockets.

good idea. I probably will get the coolant flushed next week. The PO said it was new when I bought the car 4 months ago.

Remove the gauge and clean off the ground point. Same with the coolant temp sensor.

Before you get the coolant flushed, purge all the air in the system as per ae1969. Look on this BBS and you will find members' procedures for this.

Next I would look at the thermostat. If the bleeding doesn't work then you might have a sticking thermostat. Flush the system and while you have the coolant drained change the thermostat. It is a pain but get a GOOD set of internal snap ring pliers (Snap On) and you'll save your knuckles some skin. Cheap pliers will break. Don't forget to bleed the system again.

If this doesn't work then I'd go after the radiator. If all the other components are working properly (new water pump?) then the radiator is porbably clogged (as was mine when I bought it).

Thanx!!!

The coolant bleeding seems to have worked. After the fans came on the temp dropped rapidly and stayed below the second mark. It hasn't done that since I owned it (4 months). This was with the car sitting still in the driveway and varying the rpms.

After searching this bbs, I found a post from Fort86turbo on how to do it easily.

Tahnx again for everyones help!!!

I'm not sure which one worked better, I did both before I checked the results. I am going to keep an eye on it, and bleed it again if need be.

Thanx again.
