Post gas smell

I need some trouble shooting advise. When my windows are open there is a bad gas smell especially when taking turns with a full take of gas. I heard before that there are some hoses connected to the gas tank filler, I tried to feel for then but can't do too much. are there any other things I should be looking out for? when the windows are closed, there is no smell. Its summer time, I gotta keep the windows down, what do I do???

Cool

If I was you I would stop driving the car untill you find out wheres the gas smell is coming from. First, make sure it's not coming from the Fuel rail or fuel line because you will have a fire soon. Just STOP runing the car untill you find where it's from. I had a bad experence when I smelled gas from a car and keep runing it and it cought on fire. Big lost!!!

This 944 cought on fire! This is the side that the fire will happen. This is comon on all 944 because the Fuel line that goes to the Fuel rail is right by the exhaust manifoid. I check my fuel lines every week.

Pull up the carpet in the trunk area. There is a cover over the area where the fuel gauge sender goes into the fuel tank. Replace the gasket or seal, this should cure the problem.

We had the same problem with our 944 when we bought it.. gas smell when windows down...

sounds stupid, but whoever had owned it b4 us had drilled through the floor of the trunk ( probably for speakers or something), and right through the gas tank. when full or cornering with a full tank of gas it would spalsh around and soak the carpet ... lift it up and check just in case.

anyway we just sealed up the holes on the floor so at least it doesn't smell inside the car anymore..

hmm i wonder if i should replace the gas tank.

to answer somw questions...it is a 1984n/a. I've had the problem for a while but only when the tank is over 3/4 full. It only smells when driving with the windows or roof open. Get worse on cornering. I have noticed some holes in the fender spaces in the back. they seem factory to let out any water. I don't know if that is what they are there for but I'm going to check another 944 soon. I've checked the feul rail but there seems to be no problem. Would it be the evaporative canister? please let me know. Also I have just noticed that when the car is totally full the tank drips...what do I do.

it is probably that the hose going from the filler to the tank is cracked or your filler neck is bent.
