My mustang 82 2.3L broke down the other day, and I am just wondering if anyone can offer some insight, I was driving and it started surging then died, so i coasted to the walgreens, then i managed to get it started but I had to keep my foot on the gas when i took it off it died. since then nothing, brain is good(had it tested) and the distributor is new, wires, coil is fine, plugs are new also. it has gas and its getting to the engine fine, I know that timings good etc. PLEASE HELP my moms bf's car was totalled, and my moms car is falling apart and they dont wanna drive it. I need to get to school and work somehow. thanks in advance

Hey Fanatic, check your fuel lines and make sure they are not near the exgaust, sounds like the fuel pump is vapor locking if it's a mechanical one I can't remember. I'm pretty sure it is. If it's getting spark and fuel then check your timming belt or chain for slippige. If it is a electric fuel pump there is a strainer in the gas tank connected to the fuel pump that might be stopped up. To test this...if it is fuel injected then test your fuel pressure with a gauge I think it should put out about 50 psi. Hope this helps...later

Yea sounds very rich... that is what's making it die it is flooding out, next time this happens when the car is stalled and you try to start it push the gas all the way to the floor and hold it there untill it starts this will let alot of air in and let the gas evaporate much quicker. Sound like you got trash in the carb. time to rebuild it and change the filter too. Holding the gas all the way to the floor will not only let more air in it also acts like a vacumm and pushes all the extra gas out of the cylinders and through the exhaust and alows the car to start. Change plugs, filter and rebuild carb. that should solve your problem. good luck

well first of all the needle valve was stuck down, i pushed it in and then it was free again, and the screw was on a richer setting so i will lean it out, becuase it had problems running lean before, this car is not worth $75 now seeing i have like -10 or so in my account, guess i will see if i can have a friend invest in a can of carb cleaner and then mabey bend the float so it doesnt let so much gas through. how does it work anyway? the float goes up and lets more gas in? because it was stuck down and the little lever on it was binding, i just re adjusted the stop and put it back in, thanks for all your help so far by the way

Well as the fuel level drops in the bowl the float will drop and let more fuel in. Think of a plunger thing in a toilet kinda the same thing. What you can do is adjust your float a little lower. I don't know how to do it on this car but I do know it can be done and clean the hell out of it with carb cleaner.....by the way where do you live?

Fanatic,
The basics of automotive trouble shooting. Spark Fuel Air If any one of these things has a problem, then your car will not work properly. So, did you check if you are receiving spark? Just unplug a spark plug wire, stick a screwdriver in the end of it and place the screwdriver 1/4" from a metal bracket somehwere on the engine. Have someone crank the engine over and check for a spark. I personally have a Ford Ranger with the 2.3L, and have had the electronic ignition module go bad without any warning. As for the carburettor, mine is the 2 barrel Holley/Weber (Weber design licsensed to Holley). The power valve inside the float bowl occaisonally gets bent and stuck open. This causes a lean part throttle condition and my truck runs like crap. I just unbolt the top of the carb and bend the power valve stick back into position. I would say this occurs roughly every six months. I used to have a Dodge Omni which has an almost identical carburretor to the 2.3L Ford. I had a problem where the float bowl pivots actually wore down to the point of non-existence. This really screwed things up. Just replace the float. I have probably taken my carburettor apart about 15-20 times now, so I'm pretty good at it. The screw you are adjusting is only good at idle, and will not change the mixture at part throttle or WOT. So finally, check your intake manifold for gross vacuum leaks. Look at the head flange to see if there are any major gaps. Also check to see if any freeze plugs have fallen out of the intake (this has happened to me before). Again - Spark, Fuel, Air. Kaos 1985/2 944 |

No i have the 2 barrel one.... and i had a idea, if its running rich.. i can just introduce some vaccume leaks, it should start up then huh? - I still am not sure though.. I am about to ride someones bike over there and work on it some more, I know the ECU, and the coil are good. I put new wires and everything on it too. so yeah i will give ya an update.. thanks

P.S. Fuel on your hand when you choke the carb is normal. It does not mean it is overly rich.
Also check to see if the automatic choke is opening at all. I have had mine stick closed before. |
