Does anybody know why the digital clock in the dash of my '86 951 runs about an hour slow per day? The numbers are kind of dim too. During the day I can hardly read the display and at night they all but disappear.
Thanks, Threesticks. |

Dimm, every late 944 I have seen has a dim clock. I gave up on mine and instead, rely on the clock from my cd unit

As far as dimness, the light behind the clock most likely needs to be replaced. Its an easy fix and takes a standard dash-type bulb.

Running Slow.
I believe there is a pot on the inside of the clock that probably help with that. This is only a theory. I had mine apart when it died. I replaced a couple of components and it now works great. Dim There is a light bulb in the back that probably gone out. Fix the clock. Have you ever seen how much those things cost. Thom |

Mine was running slow all of a sudden and went out whenever the door was open. The only thing that was out of the ordinary at the time was I was rebuilding the courtesy light in the rear. Fixed the light...Bingo...the light and the clock are now working perfectly again. Check all of your interior lights.

The clock, your interior lights, and cig lighter are all on the same fuse. If you have a short somewhere (small enough to not blow the fuse), it might cause your clock to run slow.
Check that fuse is 15amp, and that the PO didn't put something higher in to keep it from blowing, when he sold it. |

None of the interior lights are working. I'll have to check the fuse tonight when I get home.
Good call. Thanks, Threesticks. |

I've got a '90 S2. Clock bulb was burned out and dark at night (I don't think anything can help the daytime dimness). When I pulled the clock unit out (by the way, dealers get $295 for that unit), I found that a previous owner had removed and lost the bulb and the plastic bayonet style holder into the clock case. This was bad news as dealers do not sell the holder by itself. After a few choice words, I studied the situation and found by happenstance the cigarette lighter has a light bulb for night time illumination. Since I don't smoke, no biggie to transfer that light to the clock. Here's the real beauty: it's already light switch activated, and, the lighter is close enough to the clock that it didn't even need to be re-wired...just pull the bulb out of the lighter bracket and plug it into the clock with the wires attached. You only need a standard rubber grommit to fit into the vacated clock opening to hold the bulb tight in position. I turned my lights on after installing and it works prefect...very bright at night too. If all of this is unnecessary and all you want to do is replace the clock bulb, there have been some posting a month or so ago on this BBS advising how to do this.

Its the fuse. I had the same thing happen to me. Replace the fuse and your interior lights will come on and your clock will be up to speed again. Nice to hear about a fix that only costs a few cents!

I finaly got some time to check the fuse and there was a 10 amp installed and it was blown. I installed the correct 15 amp and the clock keeps proper time and the cig. lighter and the interior lights now work.
A porsche repair for under a buck. Thanks to everyone, Threesticks. |
