When your tranny has to come out for some reason is the time to add a LSD.

Are you wanting to add LSD to your existing tranny, or just swap out for a different transaxle that has LSD? Plenty of options available, altho its cheapest to just swap complete trannys, assuming you get a decent one (which is always somewhat of a gamble, unfortunately). If you want to add to your existing tranny, Quaiffe and Guard Torsen units are very nice for a bit over $1000 each, but you then have to get them installed by someone who knows what they are doing.
Regards,

Hmm.
I would avoid installing a used LSD in your tranny. They are a clutch type, and do wear. I heard that the LSD's from an audi 5000 series are compatible (i.e. identical), I would double check before buying one, but I think if it has an audi name written on it it will be cheaper.

Either way you do it, keep in mind that your ring and pinion are a matched set. You must remove your old ring gear and install it on the LSD differential.

Used fatory LSD units can be "rebuilt" to new spec in about an hour, so thats not a deal killer in my book. You do want to make sure you replace the clutches before throwing it in, of course, as there is nothing quite like buying and installing an LSD unit and then finding out that it doesn't limit slip...
![]() I looked into the Audi units before, they are not quite identical and I was led to believe that it is not suitable for our cars. Do you have more info you can shed on the subject? It would be great to hear from someone who has done that successfully. Regards,

I didn't know they could be rebuilt that easily. Is there somewhere these parts are available?
I don't think I can shed any more light on the subject. What I was saying is just what I have heard, sorry, no first hand knowledge.

Best deal in the world, in my opinion, is to ship the entire thing off to Kevin Gross at Castellus Engineering and let him go through the entire tranny. The LSD rebuild will cost you a whopping one hour of labor, plus parts.
As far as the parts you need to rebuild the LSD clutches, they used 917 parts originally, altho they have long since been supersceded by different parts. I can look up the part numbers for you if you need it, but they are pretty commonly available. Let me know if I can help. Regards,

Email Kevin at kgross@connact.com. He's usually pretty quick to get back to you.
Kevin really is THE best at 944 trannys. He's not going to be the absolute cheapest way to go, but I can guarantty you that it will cost you a lot more if the guy installing your LSD screws it up... Regards,

Phantom Grip.
they make an lsd-type device for way less than 800, but you have to take the trans apart.. |

I finally got mt tranny re-built and installed a Torsen II from Powerhaus and the car pulls like ***** from the apex. No slipping or sliding, just GRUNT, you're through the turn. Well worth the price of admission and the down time required. Just mind what AFJ says about the R&P. Make sure yours is in top notch shape or you will be pulling the tranny out again to replace the R&P. Don't shim the ring gear too tight and be sure to double check the back lash.
Remember, you lift you lose!!! Steve
