Engine Question
Ok this isnt related to a 944, but This is the best place I have to ask.
My mother recently ran her 1999 Toyota Solara out of oil, and im trying to put together a rough price for getting it fixed. Since she ran it out of oil, im sure she spun a bearing or two, and the pistons probably hit the walls of the cylinders ect... so what am I looking at as far as internal damage? It was run for a good While while knocking... so assume worse case. I can pick up a rebuild kit for around $700, which includes complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs. Pistons & Rings: Std., .020, .040. Bearings: Std., 10, 20, 30. But is that All I would need given the situation? I know the block will probably need to be bored out and then sleeved back to the original bore, how much can I expect to pay for that? Should I even attempt to do this rebuild? i've never done one before, and most likley wont have much/any guidance... Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Probably able to pick up a salvage motor for that price. Have to remove the engine anyway and no need to spend time rebuilding. Toyota motors are built like a tank and plenty of them available.
You can rebuild it and still have no assurance it will run correctly. Dal

General prices for a salvage engine somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 is between 600 to 1000 dollars. If you rebuild it properly, it would definitely run right again, but it will cost you more to rebuild than to replace. The advantage of a rebuild is that you know what you have after that...advantages of different motor....cheaper and quicker to get back on the road. Let me know if you need help finding one.

well if i went with a salvage motor, i found this place T.A.P. Recycling (taprecycling.net) that is selling a 78k motor for 1200. Do you know of a better place to pick one up razor? I've decided not to rebuild this thing, as you guys have said, the price is going to be more, so no reason bothering.
Engine is a 1mzfe fyi.
