Unhappy rear cam tower gasket

HELP!!! I have a small oil leak on the rear of my engine. It looks like it is dripping down from the rear of the valve cover gasket. Someone said it may be the rear cam tower gasket. I had to tighten 3 bolts where the engine lift is on the rear earlier but I still have a small leak there. Does anyone know the part number for this gasket? Or know where else it could be leaking from? It seems to be leaking straight upon the header. I did remove the engine life assembly then re-install it but it still is leaking not as bad.

thanks,
Rodney

That gasket often is the problem because its made out of cork. Its one of those few cheap parts for these cars...

You can replace the gasket with a new one or you can remove the gasket and use RTV sealant instead of a gasket (after cleaning up the sealing surfaces). I think Loctite 574 anerobic sealant would also work but a tube of that costs more than the gasket.

If it is the cam tower gasket it is much different than the cork gasket on the cap on the back of the cam tower. The cap which is retained by 3 bolts will be easy to change where as the cam tower gasket is a little harder and more involved. You will need to pull the cam tower which means you are also removing the cam and balance shaft belts. Check out www.clarks-garage.com for the write up.

Just get it fixed! Oil dripping on headers = very bad fire. I have a friend who figured that out the hard way. Very very poor design by Porsche. I put a metal shield above my headers to keep the oil from dripping directly on my headers if this ever happens to mine.

Thanks for the comment on fire hazard. I have the same leak at the cam tower and at start-up the header smokes a little until the oil burns off. I never figured there would be enuf oil to cause an actual fire, maybe I'll rethink that one and put the repair on the top of the list.
There goes all the careful belt tension that I just spent so much time getting right. Oh well, good practice I guess.

You might be able to change it without pulling the cam tower. I can't remember how much room is back there.

If you pull the cam tower it would be a good time to replace any colapsed lifters.

The 2 times I pulled my cam tower I always wanted to get a more aggresive cam from webcam. But I never do it. I realy should one day.

You can get to the cork gasket without pulling the cam tower, but it's tight. Maybe change the cork gasket first and see if that cures things before you pull the whole cam tower.

I just took my cam tower off because of the same leak. I thought the leak was from the "valve cover gasket" (ha ha). Went ahead and pulled the cam tower off and found that the leak was acutually that little gasket at the back. I made my own and sealed it up with some silicone. You probably have enough room to replace it without pulling the cam tower.
