Anything big that can be seen is just asking to be stolen. Mine goes below the rear hatch cover.

Here is my Bazooka sub, its just the small one at 50W but it puts out more than enough thump for me. Plus its small so I can still fit the roof in the back OR all my racing gear including 4 tires.

I don't a picture handy, but I have the KLA "Hidden" Subwoofer. Fits perfectly in the side compartment and give a nice boom...

I use a Bazooka 100 watt sub - I put it in the well where the spare tire would go (yup, I'm living dangerously)...
![]() I put carpet padding on the back floor (under the carpet) and around the sub to deaden transaxle/road noise, and to insure the sub didn't vibrate against the metal. It works great and is way louder than I need or want. I like it in the tire well because it's completely out of sight.

This is my setup. I have the KLA subwoofer in the passenger side trunk well, and the amp in the spare tire well. The subwoofer just sits snuggly in the hole is is not secured in any other way. For the amp, I mounted a wooden board to the bolt hole that the spare tire attaches to. Then I screwed the feet of the amp to the board and used some foam on the top and bottom edge for added cushioning. It all works great, and you can't tell any of it is there! Next step I may add an amp to power my speakers, which I upgraded a long time ago, but just have them powered off the head-unit.

I have heard Steve's setup and having the speakers in the rear wells does it's job. If I drove my car more often I would definitely be going to that style setup, with the amp hiding under the pass. seat. It looks stock, could pass as stock, and if absolutely had to be, could be converted back to stock. And while the Blaupunkt CD player is not quite period correct, one would be hard pressed to notice, as it looks like it belongs there, unlike a lot of new head units with flashy lights all over them...

I'm living dangerously too - 10" Polk with a JBL amp IIRC... no pics of the rest - Blau headunit and 4-ch amp driving 4x6 Alpines in the doors and 6.5" JBLs in the rear...

Personally I would go with the KLA type of unit. I had seriously considered it but shipping an MDF box from the US to Canada was going to be expensive. I picked up the Bazooka from Ebay, it appears to be an open box return, for about $30 it was a no brainer. I also have one in my Protege 5 (same type of deal) I am very pleased with the results.

I went for the KLA sub in the rear well. Brilliantly subtle solution, sounds great with their standard offering of a 9" driver in it and doesn’t compromise trunk space at all. I’ve got that running from a dedicated amp mounted vertically on the metal wall in front of the space saver spare tyre. Standard Blaupunkt rear speakers, JBL component 6x9"s in the front, and a Becker Grand Prix head unit. I have an old 30GB iPod stored in the armrest which is wired through to the Becker.
Sounds fantastic and it’s plenty loud enough for me.

i built a unit that sits behind the seats, in the rear seat wells - it is a dual chamber unit, run in stereo - each chamber is .35 cu ft - each one has a JL Audio 8" 4ohm driver with a Profile 400 amp run bridged mono for each
i can still fit 2 cases of wind back there, and i get a back massage to boot this shot is before i swapped out the drivers to the JL, but it looks the same http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v481/flash968/IMG_1672sm.jpg |

thanks - now that i've finally nailed it, i think i'm actually going to get around to making reverse molds of the back shells and a template for the baffle plate so that others can duplicate it - i thought about selling the thing complete, but i really don't want to go into that business - it would be cheaper and i think more fun for people to just buy the backshells, make their own baffle, and upholster it how they want
i got the grills from either crutchfield or parts express - not sure - i'd have to go back and look |
