944 Oil Recommendation

Hello,

I have an '87 944 that I do not have the owners manual for. Can anyone tell me what the manual says for recommended oil weight, type, and quantity. Someone recommended that I use 6.3 Quarts of 20w-50 Castrol or 15w-50 Mobil 1 and I chose to try 20w-50 Castrol synthetic blend because it's cheaper then Mobil 1. The pressure gauge usually never drops below 4 bar to maybe just below that on a hot day. From what I've heard it should read around 2.5 - 3 bar when completely warm so this weight seems a little heavy to me. Also can anyone recommend an oil and weight that they have found works best or should i just try a lighter Castrol synthetic blend.

Thanks!
-Tim

I got this from my 85.5 manuel, hope it helps. I think Mobile 1 is the best, but...... each to his own.

hope you are able to read it. if not let me know and ill answer it for you.

If you have summers like the NYC area, run at the very least a 40w oil. If your car see's any type of track use, stick with a 50w.

Thanks for your help everyone. Special thanks to thekidd that's going be be helpful. It seems like, even according to the manual, 40 weight is the very least to go. Can anyone tell me what their oil pressure gauge reads. With 20w-50 the lowest I have ever seen it go was 3.5 Bar driving around on a 98 Degree day but normally it likes to stay around 4 Bar. Seem a little high?

I'll drop down to 2/2.5 bar on hot days with heavy driving, Castrol GTX (Dino, not synthetic) 20W-50.

I run Mobil 1 15/50 since they don't make 20/50 any more. As for pressures, the reason I switched to only synthetic is that one day after making a few hard runs on some Valvoline 20/50 the gauge dropped to 3 bar. I immediately went to Mobil 1 and since then the gauge has stayed pegged at 5 bar (except when shifting where it is supposed to make a little blip) until I had a track day last month and it ran around 4-5 bar for the last two sessions. There is nothing wrong with it being pegged on 5 bar. Higher oil pressure is better from my experience with my 944. It is not like the 911 that makes 1.0 bar per 1,000 RPMS... totally different oiling system.
Yes, Castrol is a little cheaper, but I have tried most of the stuff out there and Mobil 1 is the only one that keeps full oil pressure even after running extremely hard.

Your car seems normal. I get the same type of readings as you using Amsoil 20w50.

I use 15/50 Mobil 1 in the 944 race car, so just to keep things simple I use the same in the 944 street car.

Thanks everyone.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone noticed a difference in pressure when using different oil filters? From the last few oil changes I have done, using the same oil, I noticed when I used a Mann filter the pressure idling was higher then when using a Mahle.

ban the spammer above me.....

anyways! i use Mobile 1 synthetic 5w30 all year round, ill drop down to 1.5 or after running hard, 2 bar with normal driving and highway. 4 bar at 4k rpm.

what i was told is that ZINC is the needed additive. and that redline is the way to go for that. it seems to be a true high quality oil, although ive never used it.

also you can use a little ZDDP additive to raise the Zinc levels. i know the older muscle crews use it and sware by it

im thinking about going to a thicker oil....i think the 5w30 is a little thin for all year run, especially with the amount of bars im getting. im thinking a 10w30 synthetic might be better, i dont think going back to Dino oil is a good choice once a synthetic was used. i think ill add a little ZDDP just to be sure

I've been using 15W50 Mobil 1 for over 10 years...no leaks... everything good. However, I don't run the car in winter.

Another +1 for Mobil 1 15W50. I was having pressure problems in my 83 NA and this cured it.

Mobile 1 0w40 in my car overall. Maybe Mobile 1 15w50 in the summer if I am doing lots of track (I also have an oil cooler).

Right now I'm using Rotella oil for the 944 I bought about a month ago.
I've been thinking about going synthetic since every car I've owned I converted to synthetic with stellar results.

But all I hear is that these old cars need zinc and blah blah.
Not that I'm not aware of the differences in oils from over 20 years ago but todays oils are better in their lubing properties compared to the old oils.

This thread seems to be a good idea of what works and so far have seen nothing bad about using a synthetic oil.
Recently, I've been a big Royal Purple fan and now using it in all cars except the 944.
Any other fans of the Royal Purple brand for the Porsches?

Listening and subscribed.

Also put Royal Purple in the Transaxle of my 88 n/a.

I think it works out well for my cars.

My 86 runs Purple in the crankcase but regular in the back .

I am going to replace the Transaxle to Purple next week.

It has a bit of a rattle at times.

I hope for some improvement.
