Intermittent wipers

My windshield wipers do not turn off in the off position on the column lever, but go into intermittent mode. All three of the other positions work properly, high, low and intermittent. The washer function is ok too.
Is this likely a problem with the column switch or in the wiper motor itself?

Probably the switch.

I'm having the same problem after I let the car sit during my long clutch job. So will corrosion in the switch contacts cause this problem? I'd like to know if any of you guys have found my symptons to be the relay before I tear into the column. Relays are way easier to change and I'm getting tired of using RainX.

The quick fix to get basic wiper functionality back is to pull the relay. They won't return on their own so you have to manually "park" them...I've gotten so good at that it's practically automatic by now. I'd be interested in what the problem is as well. I just haven't gotten around to deciphering the wiring configuration or getting ahold of a known good relay yet. The relay is a bit complicated with a few other discrete components that there's no telling how to easily tell if it's bad or if it's just the steering collumn switch.

Might check out the PC Board in the relay, ...has ordinary 80's style components. Just replace them all, ...diodes, transistors, caps, ...Fry's, Radio Shack.

It's almost always the column switch. It's a 50/50 chance one can remove the column switch and clean all contacts to get it working properly. I have found though over time it's easier just to replace the switch assembly with a known good used unit.

Of course it's easier to replace the relay, and I always have a spare relay to check it out, but 90% of the time it always leads back to the column switch assembly.

You know that the switch positions are as follows, right?
4 (most top): fast
3: slow
2: off (!!!)
1 (lowest): intermittent

I bought a relay and swapped it. it worked for a little while correctly. My next step (before my clutch blew) was to attack the grounding curcuit.

Now...I'm wondering if one of these relays did fix it since I didn't know that all the down wasn't off.
