Yes, you could do that. You can see the pressure plate bolts through the hole where the starter goes, so you'd have to remove the starter. Don't replace them with just anything. They need to be a high enough grade. Pelican sells them for like $1.75 apiece and there's 9 of them. You cannot remove the belhousing with the torque tube and tranny still in place, though. Possibly why there are bolts missing. Someone was dumb enough to think that they could get away easy doing a clutch job, found out otherwise, and just left it. Transmission must come out, exhaust system must come out, torque tube unbolted and pulled back about a foot in order to access the clutch.

I just tried playing with the shaft coupling. There is only about 1/4 gap between shafts. I tried moving the main shaft forward and backward but it kept free spinning into the bellhousing. All the pressure plate bolts are in where they are supposed to be. There is about an 1/8 of an inch gap between the torque tube and the bellhousing, but I don't think that would be enought to dissengage it from the clutch.
What are all the possiblities of why the drive shaft would spin freely going into the bellhousing??? could it be a broken pressure plate? |

bad rubber center clutch disk.
destroyed bolts at the CV joints (this is a stretch). completely worn clutch disk. destroyed ring and pinion. have you tried putting the rear in the air and spinning the wheels while the car is both in neutral and in gear?

No but in neutral the shaft spins freely in the tranny by hand. Put it in gear and it doesn't. I've finally given up for the day. Has to be a bad clutch. I'll leave it in the back until I get the money for a new clutch then start taking it apart...
Thanks very much for everyones help and hope to have it going sometime............... |

If all you need is a new clutch you can get this setup http://www.performanceintl.com/shop/detail.cgi?comp=cf_dom&make=PORSCHE&model=944&year=1988&desc=2.5L%20944,944S I got for a real good price. (the best I think) All you have to do is buy a factory throwout bearing and seals and you will be back on the road in no time.

That is a good price, no a great price!!! Thanks! I took the tranny out today and now I'm having a hard time getting the speed sensors out. Taking the bolts out was easy but they will not budge.... The day is to an end so I'll try again tomorrow....

if you are taking the clutch and all out, you may want to pull the bracket, with the sensors, and skip breaking them. ask me how i know.

I can't even get to those either. The two allen bolts are just too close to the fire wall for removal. Starting to take the engine mounts loose just to get a better grip on things.... I managed to get the biggest pair of pliers I can find and still cant get them out with wiggling and prying...........

Culprit found!!!!! Finally got it apart... Phew!!!!! Destroyed the sensors ( there goes 200 bucks) and tried everything until using my brain, and made a little allen wrench/wrench tool and took out the two bolts holding the sensors to the engine. But then still the dummys put a guide on one hole which destroyed the other sensor. Once out, the sensor I was turning wasn't even turning the whole thing!! just the top of it was turning.... Well, the end result is the clutch disc was shot. The rubber had a chunk blown out and the connections for the disc were sheered.... I'll try to attach a picture....
I can finally rest.. ahhhh.... ![]()

You can save money on BMW sensor cross reference to the Porsche. Same sensor, the wire is shorter.
Centerforce clutch disc purchased separately go for $150 or so. There is an Italian disc I just used that is very good $180 to $200. Centerforce requires the flywheel to be resurfaced if you use their disc or kit. Put in a new RMS-rear main seal GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
