is this a normal temp gauge reading? looks too high to me

1987 944na. 500miles so far and i love the car.

50deg day. rolling down the highway at 60mph. also in stop and go traffic.

i see the gauge get as high as the 2/3 mark. that seems prety close to the red part so i thought i would post up and see if it is normal. it doesn't just sit there either. it will drop down close to the 1/3 mark at times and then rise back up near or even right on top of the 2/3 mark.

since it does it when i am moving down the highway i dont think it's the fans. it is full of coolant. almost seems like a sticky tstat. is this amount of swing normal or do i have a problem?

thanks

Eliminate variables.

1) Full Coolant flush
2) Remove all air
3) Remove all air, again.

=)

so it's not normal to see swings like that?

your waterpump may be on it's way out... if you notice the reading go lower when you have your foot on the gas..

also, there may be an air pocket in your cooling system - bleed it..

I've seen the temp drop noticeably after going from stop and go to highway... But remove the variables first... =P

If it swings between the two middle marks, that's normal. If it swings beyond that, try what phoenix_iii suggested first. Did he mention that you don't want any air in the system? The radiator temperature switch might be dirty (build-up will act as an insulator) causing a slow thermal response and result in larger temperature swings.

Also clean grounds, especially those at the back of the engine. Those grounds bought me ~ 1/2 a division on the temp gauge.

How to remove air from coolant system?

Hi,
How do you bleed the air from the cooling system in the Porsche 968? I'm seeing temp swings between the middle two marks on the temp gauge, too, and didn't see those at first. Just put in a new radiator and also noticing that the fan is not staying on after I turn off the ignition, where it did before.

Thanks for any help.

there is a bleed screw at the top of the water neck at the front of the engine - it takes a 12mm wrench (on an early 92 it is hidden underneath the fuel rail cover)

verify that it is a bleed screw and not a regular bolt, and that you have the fiber washer underneath it

to bleed the system, with the nose of the car slightly higher than the rear, first make sure you have a good reservoir cap and it is on tight - then get the engine up to temp - then turn the heater on full hot and full fan - then crack the screw a few seconds at a time until no bubbles and just fluid comes out
