Porsche Crest having more overheating problems...

hey guys, i originally asked about the fan relay, and why my high speed radiator fan. so me and my dad "hot wired" the high speed fan. we did it the right way with an on off switch, and all bare wire heat shrunk. so the fan is now working. tonight we figured we would test it by running up the street to get some food, and the darn thing still got really hot... any ideas what could be going wrong? We replaced the whole front end (spindles, rebuilt brakes, rack and pinion, the whole nine yards. so we need to bring it to pro-tech auto to get the wheels aligned... but since we are having the overheating problem we cant drive it down there. thanks for all the help everyone has given me! Oh! by the way its a early 1985 944 N/A

How long have you been driving the car? Or is it a new purchase? Could have air in the system and may need to bleed the coolant system. Could be fualty thermostat, blocked radiator or could be bad headgasket.

When I had overheating problems it turned out to be the oil cooler seals having gone bad. The oil had clogged up the thermostat, and would not allow the hot water to flow from the block to the radiator. The radiator subsequently never got hot, and the fan thermoswitch never turned the fan on.

When the temperature gauge is hot, feel the hoses to and from the radiator. If they both get hot then you have flow. If they do not then you don't. If you have no flow your thermostat could be stuck closed as opposed to being clogged with oil. That would be my next check.

Good luck.

we have had the car for a month or two, and have had the car "drivable" for about a week. we have taken the radiator to a shop and had it flushed and whatnot.

Maybe you didn't get all the air out of the system when you put the radiator back in. Look at Clarks garage for the proper bleeding procedure.... Or maybe the last owner knew something that you don't.

haha, i dont think the last owner knew much of anything, when it came to cars.. all of the work he had done was done by porsche, and on the ad he said that the front boots were corroded... and the spindles were bad.. luckily we have an 84 parts car. even if there is something else wrong we only have about 500 into each of the cars.

@ Stogie25- was there oil in the anti-freeze or anti-freeze in the oil?

I was lucky. There was oil in the antifreeze. The oil was all oil, a little low, but all oil.

Porschekid, there are only a few critical parts in the early cooling system...Thermostat, Thermal fan switch, rad, coolant, proper cap to keep system closed, fans. Stogie25 has a point. The system itself could be clogged. Do the hoses get hot? Do both fans turn on, first driver side, then passenger side? By the way, the high speed fan not coming on in high heat condition means the fan relay is not good.
