DME Temperature Sensor Wiring

On my '83 944 I noticed that the wiring harness to the DME temperature sensor had been spliced and taped up. When I removed the tape I found that someone had soldered a resistor in line and the connector looks like it was originally for something else (has extra wire). Car runs okay but it idles a little rough.

Anybody know why this was done? Should I replace the sensor and remove the resistor? Also, does anyone have an old harness I could get the correct connector and about 4 " of the wiring, please let me know.

Hi , there should not be any resistors attached to that wire ,seems like someone was trying to fool the signal to the DME .

Hmmm... So the car would run richer with the DME spark timing hotter?

The wiring with the resistor was probably meant to keep the DME running in its warm up mixture, basically running rich. Likely to mask other problems. I would just cut the resistor out and resplice the wiring together and buy a new DME temp sensor.

That sensor only tells the DME when to switch fuel maps and start using the O2 sensor, nothing more.

Yep, someone was definitely trying to trick the DME into producing more power.

You can buy those connectors here: AMP Connectors and Terminals

Note that the "AMP Junior Timer" connectors are the same as the stock ones with the clip that is a pain to remove/replace. The "AMP Junior Power Timer" connectors are interchangeable and use a quick relase spring clip that is much easier to install/remove.

Also note that if ordering from Eagle Day the "Junior Timer" kits come with boots but the "Junior Power Timer" kits do not (you buy the boot separately).

I just finished rebuilding my wiring harness and have some connectors left over. If you are interested, I could sell you a 2-pole female "Junior Power Timer" kit with a boot for $12 shipped anywhere in the US. If interested, please PM me as I don't have time to check this board every day lately.

I wouldn't necessiarily buy a new temperature sensor. you can test that one easy enough if you have an ohm meter and a thermometer.

at 32 degrees F it should be about 5000 ohms
at 100 degrees F it should be about 1100 ohms
at 212 degrees F it should be about 180 ohms

Use a pot of water (with ice, low heat, and boiling) to achieve the required temps. Suspend the temp sensor in the water and let it stabilize for a few minutes, then measure its resistance.

A much less expensive place to get the connectors, is Onlinecomponents.com | Franchised Distributor of Electronic Components. They stock 2,3,4,5,6 and 7 terminal variations. Along with the terminals, wire plugs etc..

They're made by TE Connectivity (Tyco Electronics). Pricing is between .70cents and $3 per, depending on size.

Don't work for them, just had some issue with buying the 6pin from eagle day - price was way to high.
