Finally done

Bunch of nagging projects to do on the 944. Was hoping to hit 200k miles before doing them, but the nagging front crank and lower balance shaft seals were leaking pretty bad. Then, the day after it rolled over 190k, the idle motor quit. That was the sign I needed.

Called up my nice local import parts house with a laundry list of parts needed. Ended up replacing everything under the intake and between the radiator and the motor. My water pump had almost 100k on it and quite frankly, it still looks and feels darn good. (updated pump, 87 na). Replaced all the hoses, belts, idlers, vacuum lines, resealed the injectors, new intake gaskets, new idle control motor, flushed the cooling system. Pretty much anything I touched that was even marginal got replaced.

Tomorrow morning I need to change the oil and then clean up. The shop is filthy now.

She's my baby.

You like the shop? You'd probably like the private machine shop that I have in the next room.

Sasquatch, has to have a nice place to work up in his part of the country or he would go stir crazy in the long winter months. I have a friend that lives in Jerome, Id. and he told me he liked to have froze his ba!!s off the first winter up there. I guess coming from So. California didn't help too much. Great looking shop.

Cheers,
Larry

Private machine shop? Must be nice. I would love to have a lift and shop such as yours. Your 44 is a beauty as well.

Thanks guys,

The shop is actually shared with my father. He and I both run separate businesses out of the same building. I run a motorcycle suspension modification business and he an embedded computer company for the high end RV industry.

Dad usually parks his Ferrari in that shop, but it is there whenever either one of us needs it The machine shop is my shop cave. But it is really nice and I feel blessed to have it. The winters do get long here.

I have the motorcycles torn apart as well for their winter services. Looking forward to spring.

And it comes back apart.

New (rebuilt) water pump was pouring (literally) coolant out the front shaft.

Anyone else have problems with rebuilt pumps?

Unknown. I buy most of my parts from Import Parts Specialists whom I have a 25+ year relationship with. I think the part was sourced via WorldPac.

+1

OK waterpumps.

Your local FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store) only gets rebuilts from a distributer that pays nothing in wages to the workers. They will use parts that can only be described as "cheap imports" for bearings and seals.

A Pelican rebuilt would be one way to go. New or used.

There is another retailer in TX that is used by quite a few and has a 2 year warranty on rebuilt pumps.

The use of sealant --Permatex Hylomar or similiar is suggested on the gasket.

I have no faith in the ebay waterpump seller "Deutsch Parts"

IPS is a bit more than a FLAPS. Although they are local. They are huge in the BMW and Audi groups selling parts world wide. I would not be surprised if the rebuilds come from the same house that PP gets theirs.

Sealant. I did not know what to use. My mechanic buddy (owns his own well known local shop) tells me that if the surfaces are free of defects to install the gasket with nothing on them. But, the manual says to use goop. I posed that question to Rick at IPS this morning and he said there were options, but the German guys like using Reinzosil-t by Victor Reinz. I picked up a tube.

I also have a tube of Hylomar that I use on the KTM. Hmmmmm.... decisions decisions..

Elring Curil-T works well, too...and it's easy to get off with acetone.

Pelican Parts - Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche & BMW

Seems like even the Pelican rebuilt pumps are a little hit or miss. Worldpac sounds familiar. Of the two I have bought, one was from them and the other was from a different rebuilder. I don't remember which was which. The first one only lasted 30K. The seal started leaking after the second cam belt was put on, and I didn't tension the belt that hard either. The second (current) is ok, but the pulley is very slightly off center to the shaft and the pump is still 10K away from a second cam belt.

A brand new LASO pump would be a much better buy from Pelican. I don't trust re-manufactured pumps at all, especially after reading about so many horror stories.

My experience with worldpac is mostly good. A lot of their stock is old and they are looking to purge and sell cheap. If it is solid metal it will be ok but if it is rubber it may be deteriorated from sitting on a shelf. When I did my brakes I got a great deal on a pair of Zimmerman rotors, pads and hoses, stabilizer bushings, but their caliper kits were old and one of the boots was split. (not a high $ item but if you are working on a Saturday night and have to wait till Monday to return it, you get the picture) As for the brake hoses I am holding my breath! (I could use a shop like that as the winter in VA has been a little chilly)

Lets see if this pump lasts more than a day. Drove it home and it seems to be fine.

Just wanted to say i love WorldPac and they mostly distribute only the 'higher end' of part brands for p-cars. I do agree some things have probably sat on that shelf for years though.. but not really a big deal for 90% of the things you would order through them from Bosch, Mahle, Leigher&Reich and Laso The SpeedDial program is great also, its awesome getting an exact picture of the part you are ordering and realtime display of current stock at the nearby warehouses. I am lucky i live literally 5 minutes away from one of the NY warehouses, i do everything 'will call' and just pick it up an hour after ordering. The prices are usually comparable to LR, Paragon and Pelican and sometimes cheaper on a few select items (a big portion due to having a dealer account), especially if you need something quick.

The end tanks on the radiator in my Cherokee started leaking last month and it was friday at 3pm, ordered everything through WorldPac..brand new Bosch waterpump, all aluminum 2-core rad, tensioner..etc and had everything in hand by 4:30pm.. total cost for the job was under $270 with a gallon of coolant. Cant beat that, i cant even get a waterpump for a 944 for $270.

Absolutely!! Why play games and have to redo the job? I've been running Laso WPs for years without issues.

Because money is tight. $90 vs. $300. This is not a car I have to rely on daily, and I have a nice shop to work on it all added into my decision. I would never buy a rebuild anything from one of the big box stores (schucks, O'Riely, Autozone, etc.), as I know how they tie the hands of the builders into cutting too many corners.

There is no reason that a rebuilt pump can not last every bit as long as an OEM pump, if, proper rebuild procedures are adhered to. World-Pac is one of the better ones with a very low return rate.

I spoke to a friend of mine who owns a Porsche shop here in town who used to do a ton of water pumps when 944's were still popular and cared for. While he always went with OEM where he could, he did use a bunch of rebuilds from the same source I bought mine from and he does not recall ever having an issue.

Mine was a fluke I guess.
