944 wont start! Need help

So my 944 has never had a problem until one morning I try to start it and it just keeps cranking with no sign of starting. Before this problem, whenever I would put the keep in and turn on the ignition I would get a binging noise which would repeat 3 different notes and my gauge lights would light up. No that is wont start, it doesn't play the noise but the lights on the dash are still lit. I put a new DME relay and no luck. What could it be cause it happened out of no where and was driving perfectly the night before. Never had a problem with starting. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

UPDATE:

After more research I am starting to think it's the speed sensor because I checked is there was resistance with an ohm meter but there was no change on the speed sensor. Reference sensor looks good. Also when cranking the RPM gauge doesn't move. So could it be the speed sensor? If so is this link the item I need to buy?

Put a brand new relay yesterday. Pump is working. The year is 83.

IIRC some have used less expensive BMW sensors in place of the Porsche ones. I have not had this problem as of yet so hopefully others will confirm this for you along with the correct sensor to substitute. Ah, here's the post:

Hello & welcome.

To save you money and time...

Clarks garage has a simple resistance check to see if the reference sensor is bad.
Speed and Reference Sensors - Checking, Replacement, and Adjustment

Now, Pelican sells reference sensors. The OEM sensor has a metal silver end at the bottom. I prefer this style to the black plastic in your link.

Now, did you know that there is a 1/2 price interchange for the OEM sensor? The only thing different is the length of the cable.

A BMW 535i years 85-88 will work. Pelican sells these.

Stick with the sensors with the silver end.

Finally, The sensor connections at the rear of the engine get brittle and loose contact. Check and clean the connections.

COVER THE TDC HOLE ON THE BELL HOUSING. DO NOT DROP A BOLT IN THE CLUTCH.

Do not force the sensor out of the sensor bracket. If you damage the sensor or break it off you are in "deep trouble-hours of work".

Wow, thanks everyone for all the help! It means a lot! I have a question about the sensor for the BMW. Could it be possible to get that sensor at stores like Auto Zone or Kragens because I called all of them and of course none of them could get the sensor for the Porsche. Once again, thanks for all the info and now I need to put it to use!

One more question. Is the reference senor and the speed sensor the exact same sensor or are they different? Cause my local store cant order the BMW reference sensor but they can order the BMW speed sensor

Yes, the speed and reference sensors on 944's are exactly the same.

I've heard there is an interchange with a BMW sensor (that's easier to find and also cheaoer) but I'm not sure which. And BMW speed and reference sensors may not be exactly the same.

I just had an epiphany: would a bad reference sensor make the beeping sound when you turn the key to the on position go away? Because I am starting to lean more to the DME. Wouldn't a bad DME do that?
