Engine Pull

Looking for some input here. I am looking at buying a 951 which has an oil leak. I will probably have to pull the motor. Having never pulled one of these can anyone give me an estimate of the hours required to pull a 951 motor. Seeing as it will be my first time I will assume the worst as I am aware the second and third time around it usually goes quicker. I read the write up on clarks My guess would be maybe 8 hours but not really sure. Any input from someone who has done this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Thom

It only takes a few hours if all of the bolts come off. Soak the torque tube to bellousing bolts and any bolts you can get to with PB blaster/liquid wrench/WD 40 or whatever you like to use the night before.

If you can manage the eight hour estimate, I think you will have done damm well.

8 hours is a solid estimate. You are correct it is much faster after your second or third (or 12th...) time. I was able to switch engines between two 944 racecars in a weekend, starting about 3PM on the first day til dark, and maybe 10am and done before dark the second day with a 944-savvy helper. Probably 15 hours total.

Before you go spending all those hours/days pulling the engine, you might better spend a few minutes and try to localize where the oil is coming from.

Most of the places oil drips from on 944's are accessible without any major pulling efforts.

Might end up saving yourself a whole lot of time and effort.

+1
I can't think of any seal that can't be done in the car. If your going to do ALL of them it may be easier out. I'll let you know though, I have to do my lower balance shaft this winter. Looks like a PIA just looking at it/

+1. While not a horrible job, pulling the engine on a turbo car really isn't all that fun either. If you don't intend to mess with the suspension, you can pull it from the top and save some time.
