Spent a little time playing with the steering rack and decided I'd postpone putting everything back together pending a new compensating line (can't get the L-shaped hose nipples without the rest of the line, apparently).
It took a good bit of effort to get the centering screw fully inserted in the steering rack, as the PO (or his representative) ran the pressure line from the PS pump directly over the hole for the centering screw. ![]() Tightened down the hose clamps on the electric water pump. Hopefully that will iron out the last of the coolant loss when the system is under pressure.

Participated in Youngtimer rally hill climb event. Was an interesting experience to to on a closed twisted public road WOT
Helmets were obligatory. Here is a video where you can see some of the cars. Mine is 951. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jOJd5TG6CU&feature=youtu.be Hear are some pictures: Just had installed new exhaust and waste gate two weeks ago and this was first drive outside city. I was surprised to see that with full 3 inch exhaust (including down pipe) it was the quietest one on the course, also compared to stock NA 944. From inside the sounds is grate, especially above 3000 rpm. At highway cruising starting from 3000 rpm (around 70 mph) it is almost as quiet as stock until you go on a throttle. There is at time some annoying resonance at 2000 - 2800 rpms (also with the stock exhaust that range did not sound good). Last edited by smudo; 09-14-2014 at 12:34 AM.. |

Today I installed my new arm banana mount. I broke the original while removing torsion bar housing.
Old broken one: ![]() New one installed: ![]() I also installed my new trailing arm bushings. The trailing arms had those evil bushing liners too, but these were quite painless to remove. Old liners out: ![]() The new bushings were impossible to press in with my vice, so I had to resort to taking them to the shop next to where I work. My Ground Control coilovers should be here soon. Once those finally arrive I can set this thing on all four wheels for the first time in almost a year! |

Made some brackets so I could install an early aluminum belly pan on my 86. Engine cooling has improved.
Here is a shot of my dash after a 12 mile backroad drive.

I'm doing the project I've dreaded for the last several years: heater hoses and heater core in my 83 NA.
Disassembled and waiting for parts: ![]() What a colossal PITFA it was to get to the stupid heater hoses! I hope they sent the engineer that designed this to Eastern Europe to work on Yugos... Stupid, stupid, stupid design. At the same time, I've gotta compliment Porsche on heater hoses that last 31 years! While I'm in there, I'm recovering my dash (which is severely cracked), replacing the heater core, and am gonna put new plugs on the speed and reference sensor wires on the harness-side - I've been having to jiggle the wires, occasionally, to get it to start. I've been through that with other cars and it only gets worse. So replacing the plugs with new ones seems the way to go. This car's my daily driver and it has to be dependable... Yes, I'm gonna clean up all the grounds while the dash is out and replace the foam rubber in the HVAC unit doors. I'm also thinking of replacing the gas lines... The dash cover is from Coverlay. I think it's gonna look pretty decent. I've given up hopes of finding a good dash from a wrecked car - just too much time has passed. I looked at the leather dash covers from Classic 9 Leather Shop, but after trying to prepare a donor dash, I gave up. I just wasn't confident I could make it look good - $400 bucks is just too expensive for something that might or might not end up looking like a grade school kid did it. So I went with Coverlay. About a quarter the price and much more idiot proof. ![]() I spent maybe an hour gluing it on and fixing the clamps to hold it all down properly. It fits well. I think to a casual observer, it'll look like a normal dash. I take the clamps off tomorrow. I'm stuck till next Monday or Tuesday waiting for the heater core. Hopefully I'll have it back on the road by the end of next week.

Today I installed my hubs, rotors, and calipers. Before I could install the hub I had to remove the old tie rod ends to make way for my new ones. They make tools for removing them, but I don't have one, so I used my trusty hacksaw to cut them off.
![]() After that I bolted it up to the strut and lifted the control arm into place. That's when I realized these struts were way too short. They were so short that the brake dust shield was rubbing on the end of the control arm. That's when I realized I had the camber/caster plates on the wrong side of the fender.... They should go on under it like this: ![]() That gave me an extra 2 inches or so of room. Once that was settled I put on my rotors and calipers. ![]() Is there a special tool I need to install my new tie rod ends? I can't figure out how I'm supposed to install these things. There's no way to hold the bolt while I tighten the nut so it just spins. |

I got a new windshield on my 924S, a generic rearview mirror with a larger mounting piece that will hopefully not pop off when I bump into it with my large head or arms or elbows, and nice wiper blades.
I also picked up an IMI high-torque starter that's barely been used. Then I came home and put my brand new radiator in my VW Rabbit Convertible with a radiator fan from a car 10 years newer...which has three wires instead of two. I figured out how to wire it up so it works perfectly. It was a good day.

I've heard nothing but good things from people who have them, and my starter has had intermittent solenoid issues for years, so I've wanted the IMI starter for a while. This one popped up on Craigslist for $100 less than a new one, so I jumped on it.

Finished up my rear wheel bearings, installed new braided brake lines from Larts ( very nice and DOT approved), new axles, stage 8 axle bolts, fresh powder coated rebuilt front and rear calipers and swepco gear oil. installed new to me gear reduction start. Drove it for a few miles and then discovered the radiator fan hit the lower hose. So now I ordered upper, lower, and both coolant reservoir hoses from Paragon parts.
