Transmission making noises ... Help.

Hey guys, so I changed the CV axles, checked the tires and rotors and pads, all checked out fine. My mechanic claims that the noise I'm hearing is coming from the tranny ... a friction-induced noise that comes on once every turn of the tires (which is why I suspected the tires and rotors in the first place) ... the noise gets loudest between 40 and 60 mph, then sort of becomes steady at 80mph ...

I've taken good care of my tranny in terms of not driving hard or auto-xing or anything like that, and I've had Valvoline 80W90 Durablend semi-synthetic fluid in there for the past year or so, so it was never low on fluid ...

Is there anything I can try to get rid of this sound? like switching to redline or swepco fluid?

Thank you in advance ...

E

Ehab ; whoa; before you go into expensive trans repairs , try this, jack up the rear of the car ,remove both tires and rims, grab the stub axles and try to see if there is any free play. It might be a back swing arm bearing going bad . This not uncommon and often happens when a cv goes bad. If there is any free play up and down ,this is a sign of a bad wheel bearing and the drum then rubs. Another sign of this might be that the rear hub gets very hot from the bad bearing after having been run. Often ,the results are a warped drum, which you then hear as the rubbing sound every turn of the wheel. One other thing, on occasion the parking brake cables stick and do not allow the brake shoes to return and the drum is over heated and gets warped ,causing the symptoms you are alluding to.As the shoes get hot ,they expand and the whole deal gets worse. You might notice a slight pulling to the steering of the car if this the case.

Hey, thanks for the reply, I too feel that blaming the tranny might be jumping the gun as well, but I just replaced the CV axles a couple of weeks ago, so they shouldn't be bad, although they are remanufactured.

As for the bearings, I'll try to see if there is any freeplay in the rear, and also check on the Ebrake situation ... I'll keep you posted.
