Rear Hatch Glass

Due to fitting replacement rear hatch struts that i guess were too strong, the glass has seperated from the frame at the top Does anyone know how to fix this?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. There's probably a number of posts here in the archives and I know Clarks GArage has a write up on repairing it also.

Based on others feedback that have replaced their struts and then had to deal with the glass issue, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to replace mine when the time comes. I understand some haven't had any issues with new struts but I think the two are related.

I'm probably going to make something out of wood that will hold the hatch open.

New struts have a lot more pressure than my old 25 yo dead ones, for this reason I'm in the market for some used struts.... PM's welcome.

Put the old, dead struts back in and carry around a broomstick cut to the proper length.

Some will just get a used good hatch due to the hours involved and possibly a do-over.

The stabilus struts are too strong? O_o that's what I have on my 944, last 944 I fitted some aftermarket "strong arm" brand from eBay, neither have separated yet..

A silly question maybe, but can I drive it without the glass coming out?

Simple answer.....yes, but it will most likely leak when you wash the car or get caught in the rain (depending on how far it has seperated).

mine was like this for a year till I took it off the car and followed the reseal steps listed above. turned out perfect but took some time as you do not want to break that glass. Now I use a broom stick and took the struts off. I rarely open it anyway.

You can reseal these frames but it'll take you an afternoon and then a 12-hour wait for adhesives to cure. Be cautious removing the frame and when you're finished stand the hatch up on its leading edge to keep pressure on the trim as the adhesive cures. I've done a couple - carefully. The real problem is that once you start resealing them you'll be doing it every 3 or 4 years, as they pull out again if you use new struts. I'm in the broomstick club now but my hatch doesn't leak.

+1 on the broomstick club also. Actually it's a copper pipe. Nothing to good for a Porsche. I did get new hood shocks as soon as I got the car. More time is spent under the hood than in the trunk.

+1 for the broomstick. Mine doubles as a hood prop as well. I spend much more time under the hood than anywhere else in the car.(including driving it)

Not always, if depends on how strong the adhesive is that's holding the glass in the frame. Time will tell.

If looks like I need to invent a better solution for the hatch struts. One that doesn't push the frame away from the glass.

What if the bottom of the struts were mounted toward the rear of the car thus pushing the glass towards the front when down??? We could find longer strut rods from a different car. Some car hood struts are this way.
