Radio Relay
Has anybody actually seen a failure with the radio relay on early 944s? Is it common?

if you're talking about the relay that turns on the radio when you insert the key then yes i've had two fail on the 84 - of course that said i did replace them with old used ones so it could be they were at the end of their life anyway

Never had the radio relay fail, but I have had a couple of ignition switches that wouldn't allow the radio to turn on when the key was inserted.

That is sort of what I'm wondering. WHat is the fix?

I replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Actually the original became cracked and the radio only worked when the key was turned just right. I was constantly fiddling with it while the car was running to keep the radio on. After I replaced it, it worked normally again until that switch took a complete dump and wouldn't even start the car. Replaced it, all is normal.
