Need help!

Haven't been on here in a few months as my car's been running fantastic! However, now I've got a new issue. I noticed a few days ago that my car's been running a bit rough on idle. Nothing I hadn't experienced before. Then my car just upped and shut off while driving on the freeway. Odd thing is, I didn't get any signs of fuel loss or anything like that. It just shut off with no warning. I got it running and it happened three times on my way home until it just died. Now the engine turns it attempts to start but it doesn't actually start. I pulled off the distributor cap and half of the rotor was burnt off. Now I don't seem to be getting any current to the wires from the cap. Should I replace the cap? Also if anyone has a good suggestion please let me know. I really can't miss too many days of work because of this lol. Also, I have an 88 924 S

Replace the rotor. Replace the cap. Measure for continuity between the coil and the cap (main ignition wire). Measure for continuity on the individual plug wires. Replace as necessary.

I replaced the rotor after a 6 hour battle with it's infamous cap screw that seems to strip every chance it gets. I'm picking up a distributor cap today. Should I replace the spark plug wires?

Is the battery at full charge?

What type of plugs are you using? Cheap copper NGK or Bosch single tip are best.

Do you use the stock ignition coil?

Do you have an oil leak from the cam getting into the cap?

yeah dude. Some dude came along and smashed into the side of the car. The door came off. I was beat up pretty badly. But the car ran just fine up until yesterday. I was shocked, these cars are made of good metal. Thank god i wasn't driving my old kia that night.

As for the battery. The car's struggling to start seems like it's dying. So Im gonna buy a new battery to see. The plugs are bosch, there's no oil leak, and the ignition coil is in fact stock.

Test the battery at the auto parts store first.

If good, it will be the alternator or a cheap regulator replacement.

Try a different DME/FUEL pump relay or the 3 wire jumper --see Clarks Garage

A low, discharged battery may do damage to the main DME computer or other electrical parts.

ok so, Just bought another DME. No go, now i have a spare in the glovebox. New battery. Car attempts to start up even better than before, but wont hold charge. Replaced rotor, and cap, put in new NGK sparkplugs. and nothing as of yet. Car tries to start but wont hold.

Time to take it to someone who knows how to diagnose a 944. Try a Porsche specialist, but make sure that he has a copy of the 944 factory service manual first.

Some things are left better to experts.

large vacuum leak. timing belt jumped some teeth. bad speed/reference sender(s). the options are nearly limitless.

yeah lol. Its sitting at a mechanics shop they can't seem to figure it out. I hate dealing with "Pros" I gave him a call to suggest checking the ECU and Speed/ REF sensors. He totally got all pissed off at me.

If this guy can't figure it out by tomorrow, then I'm going to pick it up. I posted this up on Rennlist. and I basically ran through the logical checklist. Replacing parts as I went. (She needed a tune up anyway). Only thing I haven't checked was the speed/ Ref sensors and the ECU. If anyone has a spare that works let me know, I'll buy it off of you.
