I'm baking my caps now in the over at 400F for 20 mins. Once they cool, I'll apply a clear coat spray and put them back on. Can't wait!!!
The whole process too me about 4 hours to do with about $12 in supplies (paint, brushes, clear coat spray).

those look great man, good job. i painted mine a while back, but didnt put anything on them to protect them and the paint washed/wore off. it really sucked. im gonna do it again but im gonna polish the center cap to a mirror like finish and then paint the crest. i think itll look good on my black cookie cutters with polished lip.

My caps should be at your house in the next two to three business days. When you get mine to look like yours then send them back.

Here's a pic of all four caps, finished, with clear coat spray freshly dried. DEEEEEP GLOSS!
I am soooooo stoked as to how well they came out and can't wait to get them back onto my car. seb928s.......the only supplies I used were Testors Gloss Black 1147, Gloss Red Rouge 1103, Gold 1144, Paint Thinner 1148, 2 x Loew Cornell 795-0 Brushes....all were found at an AC Moore crafts store but the Testors paints can be found at any model parts store. Get THIN brushes. Total Cost of Supplies: $9.34 no1biscuit.....if you are serious, I can paint your caps for a $50 charge + shipping. I figure it takes me 4 hours to complete a set.......which includes a 15 minute break for me to tend to nature's business.

I did my centers 3 times, took me about 4 hrs each time, and each time I clear coated and each time I went to the car wash, just to rinse the car,it would start to blow the paint off,it would take about 2 trips to the car wash before it started happening, will I ever learn? I'm going to do it again soon.
P.S. I have cookie cutters and my center cap looks like it is purple, and WON'T sand off! Thats probally why the paint won't stick good. Annodized I guess.

Well, I followed your instructions with regard to the paint codes and painted my caps. I think that they look great. What an improvement. It's not hard, but you have to use a very fine brush. Thanks for the tips and instructions.

Somewhere, there's a lady that does this kind of thing full time, but it's not really that hard, it just takes time and patience and a steady hand. Mine took me 4-5 hours on a rainy Sunday afternoon while watching football and they absolutely make the wheels!
no1biscuit (Thom): get the paints and the brushes and set aside an afternoon, you'll thank yourself and feel good about doing it yourself. Here's how mine turned out and they were the plastic centercaps too. |

Well this is sort of a blurry pic...but this is after i washed my wheels..they were recently refinished by my bodyguy and then i painted the Centercaps and he taped them off and shot the centercaps and then clearcoated the whole thing...so my centercaps are clearcoated with top quality autopaint clearcoat

Nice looking caps, guys.
Just a suggestion to those thinking of doing it: If clear coating, use flat colors Paint the entire crest area black first (saves time in painting the antlers, letters, etc) with thinned gold, flow in the recessed areas (may take 2 coats) then paint the red areas and clear coat when dry. If I do mine again (didn't clear coat) I'll paint the shield around the horse yellow as many are done in the catalogs. cheap projests lead t o the most satisfaction!

When I did my wheels, I used whatever spray can clear is intended for wheels at my FLAPS - I think Plasti-Cote but it may have been Dupli-Color. I did not use the associated silver because the metallic was way too coarse. I used Eastwood Rally Wheel silver and it looks great. For the crests I used paint pens - really! - for the black (or it might have been the red? I forget) and it looked great, regular modeler's paint for the other colors. I do know that I masked off for the gold and used a spray can and for the rest just did it freehand and then cleared over it all. Were I to do it again I'd wait longer before clearing (I only waited an hour or so) because it "melted" the paint slightly and I lost a little detail, but this was just for a DD with oxidized center caps so it wasn't a big loss.
good luck nate
