transaxle

Just swapped a new 84 engine in my 86' 944 and i am having trouble connecting the spline to the drive shaft. Does anyone have any special tips to the process?

Bolt up the transaxle bellhousing then have someone push the clutch pedal and hold it to the floor to allow the driveshaft to rotate. You are under the car sliding the coupler from the drive shaft spline onto the transaxle spline. A light coat of grease on the splines will help and a long screw driver to help pry the coupler forward.

When I put mine back together from a clutch job, I had the coupler installed on the transaxle side (not bolted) and then while I rotated the rear wheel by hand (tranny in gear) the coupler would turn slightly and I simply pushed it forward until it finally slid onto the drive shaft. The bell housing was already bolted together so you can get to the coupling through the access hole.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

. . .then weep softly as you realize the clutch disc just slipped out of alignment, and you are back to square one after taking bad advise from the interwebz.

What are you going on about? If he is installing the transaxle the drive shaft and clutch are already installed.

I always cover the splines on both sides with Never-seez. Then slide the coupler on and off a few times. Sometimes you need to tap the coupler on and off a few times to get it to slide freely. I do this on the Tranny side too. It will help when you go to pair them up and will make life easier in case you ever need to take it off again.

'86 944 vibration during hard acceleration

My '86 944 vibrates during hard acceleration and lost of power to the rear wheels. It feels like the rear wheels are out of balance, but all 4 have been road force balanced. Also, there is little to no vibration during moderate acceleration. Any suggestions are helpful.

Thanks,

Swap the axles left/right so the inboard joints become the outboard and vise verse.

While they are off, check them for excessive play and ensure the grease is in good shape and the boots aren't torn.

Reinstall after cleaning the bolts and mounting holes and use loctite on the bolts then torque them to spec.

If that doesn't help, you may need new CV joints, motor or transaxle mounts.
