to sum up - better is relative. it's all about how clean whatever oil is.

all things being equal, the amsoil will be better than the others because it is a full synthetic, which would last longer and cost less in the long run.

I've been told castrol and many big name oil brands use a derivative of anti freeze in the oil to reduce temps and make it appear as though it is working, while sacrificing lubrication qualities. I'd stay Far away from castrol.

For me with a higher mileage engine dino 20/50 oil is the best. Running mobil 1 my seals started to seap so I went back to mineral oil and it has been 4 years and the seap has not returned.

I have to say a lot of the "jibberish" in the last three pages of post will not offset the good performance my 135,000 mile 944 has given to it's two ownership life using ONLY Shell Rotella SAE 10W40 dino oil. The first oil change at the dealership, when new, at 3000 miles has always been the same, no additives ever. No oil pressure issues, no leaks, no lifter noise. Can't argue sucess. Same goes for my old MB , It's at almost 190,000 miles. All old german n/a engines like dino oil. If I ever by anything "new" I would use Mobil 1. Oh yea, Shell Aero (dino) in the Tri-Pacer.........1800 hrs SMOH, no problems.

I guess my situation is different because I only drive my 944 in the summer on nice days but I've used Mobil 1 15w-50 syn for the last 10 years. I have no oil pressure issues or leaks nor do I have lifter noise. My car presently has 175 K. Mobil 1 works for me...

I used Castrol for the first couple of years but my oil consumption was more than using Valvoline so I am sticking with Valvoline 20/50.

or 10w40 Castrol High Mileage oil?

what about brad penn 20w50?
Yes.

Castrol GTX 20w-50 for warm weather,
10w-30 geriatric(high mileage) for cold in the 924s
10w-30 GTX in the Frontier Nismo and the Legacy year around..
No consumption issues...been using GTX for years.

Thumbs up Update, Less viscosity is approved and better, not like 20w-50

To All:

Less viscosity Synthetic is approved better and definitely not 20w-50....

Please remember, I did not make this all up! "Jedi Mind Trick"

All this smells a lot like silly California smog-regulations. To have the CARB-EO number stamped on your catalytic for legal sale in CA, you need to have it submitted to, tested and approved by CARB. However, just because there's a list of 100-approved products for the CA market, doesn't mean that there's an additional 5000 catalytics that will work just as well. In fact, most of those 100 approved products are the exact same sold in the other 49-states. Just that the ones in Cali has been "approved" by the CARB. The other 5000 will work just as well, they just don't have the stamp.

Same thing with oils, sure Porsche tested X-number of oils and put them in their specs chart. That doesn't mean there's not a tonne of other oils developed after 1987 that meets or exceeds Porsche's requirements.

To really make this discussion worthwhile, please provide a list of objective, measurable criteria that Porsche used to test their oils. Only by replicating Porsche's own tests on newer oils can we know for sure if they do or do not meet those specifications.

Same

This has NOTHING to do with us. That's from 1997, and for a Boxster.

With Blackstone you don't need to file it. All your reports are available on line.

they are if you set it up that way. i didn't. i don't really do the "online" thing much. i'm still pretty much a dinosaur where that is concerned. i don't even know how to text, and actually have that feature disabled on my phone. i'm now down to only checking email once a day too.
