OK,,if you fit then I'll fit. Guess addressing this issue should be first. I'll just have to find one and sit in it. Will start looking for a newer S that's well sorted out. And as far as cost, I don't mind paying a little premium for a well cared for car. Owning an 81 air cooled you learn a lot about the cost to maintain these things.

I'm sure the 968 was a nice car, and they had the 'S' I believe, but I just think the 944 has better lines.

944S2 is the best of the bunch.
You'll fit fine. They came with the 3.0 16 valve engine, 210 hp or so, and usually all the available options.

The regular 2.5 "S" is somewhat anemic feeling in my opinion at anything under 4000rpm. It actually is a little faster than the standard 2.5 8v even at those revs but it just doesn't "feel" quick until higher up. If you want a sports car toy the S will work great though, but not so much as a traffic driver.

OK, after surfing for several hours,,,here's what I found:

1) There's a lot of crapola out there that folks are trying to unload

2) There's cars that were parked for years, and now they want ridiculous money because of very low miles. Caveat Emptor!

3) There's tons of very high mileage cars (see point #1)

4) Because it has a turbo, owners think it's a 30 and even 40k + dollar car (these aren't 930s or even tt's)

5) S2's are asking 17-20k. Seems pretty high, but it's asking price.

6) The search for an S2 that's nice and clean with decent mileage and will pass smog is most likely gonna be a very long one!

So the search officially begins! 7/19/2015

I agree. As much as I love my '86, that color / interior combo does it for me. If the description and pics are accurate I say it's worth the price. (not to say I wouldn't negotiate)

BTW I'm 6-3+ and 230 and the 944 fits me just fine.

I admit that sometimes I wish my 84 had just a little more umph like some of the later cars but I also don't beat on her at all. Someday I will adopt a 928, hopefully before prices are out of sight.

OK, a couple of questions.

Anyone here own a Cab? Is it noisy on the highway, and does the mechanism break easily? Are the seals bad so they leak? Yup,,,,standard Cab questions.

Secondly....is the 968 the same mechanicals as the 944...ie engine, tranny, etc?

Thanx.

PS. Don't worry, there will be lots more questions if'n ya can't answer these!!!!!

"80% of the 944's mechanical components were either significantly modified or completely replaced by the engineers, leaving so little of the outgoing S2 behind that Porsche management chose to introduce the variant as a new model, calling it the 968"

Thanx Nick, but what does that say about the 968? A car around for only a few years with limited availability for repairs and parts? What made it better (if it was)? I've had, and have, cars that require a bank loan to get certain parts. Don't wanna live that nightmare ever again!!!

the interior, front suspension, rear suspension are pretty much carryovers from the later 944s, basically the same as what a 944T would come with.

the transmission is totally different, the torque tube is different, and the engine is like the 944S2 engine but with vario-cam added to the head/computer and bigger valves/ports.

don't worry about mileage, look for maintenance.
kept up and maintained well, 200k miles is nothing to worry about on a 944/968 car. they are very durable.

ive pulled apart a car with over 300k miles and the cylinder bores looked brand new still, the carpet was all intact and clean, and pretty much everything still worked.

this one is for sale

1984 Porsche 928S - Rennlist Discussion Forums

old thread on rennlist. just drove it today. ice cold AC.

$8500.

I keep telling myself I need to advertise it harder... part of me does not want to sell. just about every time I drive it.

the 944s are more fun to drive, especially the turbo.

but the 928 is just a great driver, comfortable, long distance cruiser, and handles great. more interior room too. and the growl of that V8 with headers and a full 3" SS exhaust.

but got the 951 DE / street in the garage again for some suspension upgrades and finish reinstalling the AC before the next track event. yes ... AC on a track car. I prefer to look and feel good than be a sec faster.

and just got started on dropping the engine / tranny on the 930.

so parts costs will start piling up.
