Sudden onset of hesitation
Mostly a lurker here, and have searched a number of hesitation and stumbling threads.
I have an '89 S2 and over the past year of ownership have replaced fuel filter, plugs, cap, rotor, timing belt service, motor mounts, alternator, air filter, shift linkage and a few interior bits. The car has run flawlessly...until this morning. Car was washed, including engine bay on Sat. Driven on Sunday (no issues) and then when I started it this morning it felt rough. Lots of hesitation at all RPM's and throttle openings. 20min drive this morning didn't clear it up. Warm idle "feels" smooth at just a tick over 1000. There have been some temperature fluctuations (I live in Maine) and humidity was certainly higher this morning than yesterday. The only other thing I did yesterday was fill up with Shell 93 octane from a station I've used before. Where should I start looking for a solution? Thanks all. The usual checks. Cap and rotor, coil wire, ignition wires, spark check (it has to be able to jump 10 mm or more).
It does not really matter if you replaced parts in the past except I suppose it might mean that a part you replaced (like the cap or rotor) has now come loose. It'd be weird to get bad gas at a Shell station but that could have happened so you can try some dry gas additive but since it seems load dependent it sounds more like ignition. -Joel.

Check you cap/rotor for moisture.

Being an S2 it could have rotor damage from a corroded and misaligned timing cover. The usual checks one performs when the car is hesitating should help.

An update, FWIW. An under-hood check showed nothing unplugged, so I removed the distributor cap looking for water. The lower bolt's "washer" was spinning...meaning that bolt wasn't fully tightened, but the cap and rotor were clean & unmarked on the inside. Bolted that back up and pulled each spark plug lead to see if anything looked amiss...dialectric grease still on end of plugs, so put those back in.
Wiggled the fuel injector, TPS, MAF wires, restarted car and issue gone away. I think that's comforting... ![]() Thanks for the suggestions. |
