944 S2 HID headlight conversion?
Has anyone done this? If so anything we should be concerned about?
Would you mind directing me to the parts list required? I know it's best to use projection lenses. Many thanks! |

I tried HID in my '84 944 NA. I got some from eBay - Cheap. I thought I did some quality research in order to solve the dim headlight issue common to older 944s. The kit I got looked good, well packaged, and of decent quality I thought. I installed them correctly. OMG! What a mess! Light beams came out like a disco ball on acid! Returned them fast and got a refund. I replaced the Sylvania silvers with Wagner Lite Brites and they really helped a lot. After reading a bunch more, I'm thinking Hellas are the way to go for me. I hope to hear more from other readers and you. Good luck and am interested on your results.

Try the E-code lenses and a headlight relay harness first.
About 10x more light than the stock sealed beam lights, and probably 2x as good as the H4 lenses...really. |

E-code lenses:
7 Ecode H4 Headlight - Hella Harness: 944 Headlight Relay Harness The harness makes a huge difference over even the E-code lenses installed with stock wiring. E-code lenses make a better pattern on the road but are still mediocre with stock wiring...the relay harness makes them BRIGHT. |

The Hella's are great! I've run Hella's and Cibie's on all of my cars that had standard headlights. The beam pattern alone makes a huge difference. I only ran higher wattage bulbs my CRX because the early ones had only the two lowbeam lights from a four light system.

Big time +1 to the E-code lamps and relay harness. You can save a few bucks if you build the harness yourself. See Daniel Stern's website for parts, etc. Be sure to use good connectors and the right crimper pliers (and being a good solderer is a big plus too).
I got Hella lenses, but I believe the Cibies are better (also much more expensive). IIRC, the Hellas throw a lot of light up and away when using the brights, while the Cibies do a better job aiming the light down the road. The Hellas have a slightly sharper low-beam cutoff, though. The other thing I did was use 90/100 W lamps in place of the stock (legal) wattage. The E-codes (especially the Hellas) have such a sharp beam cut off and the car is so low that even though they are much brighter, oncoming drivers don't get blinded. You do have to be on it when driving with the brights on, or you will blind people! Always aim your lights according to specs!
