Something to listen to. CD, MP3, tapes
Can of tire inflator.
Small fire extinquisher.
First aid kit
Spare DME computer.
Set of plugs.
Fuel Pump spare.
Blanket.
Tools-tools-tools-and the OEM kit.
Fuel Pump Relay (NOT URO)
Fuses.
Phone to call AAA
Gallon of water.
Quart of oil.
Just the basics...I have 2 sets, 1 for each car.

The only repair I've had to make is the fuel pump relay on the road.

Have a good trip.

Quart of oil.
Tire inflator, if you carry the spare.
Bottle of water, for you and/or the car.
Spare DME relay.

I also carry jumper cables and a tow strap just in case...and I needed the strap to pull me out of the ditch a few weeks ago lol.

Steve,

Unless you are enjoying a laugh, and I did smile when I read your reply, you should read the owners manual in the glove box.

It has fascinating information, pictures of relays, fuses and a sequence of maintenance.
It explains how to properly jump a 944 properly, reducing your chances of destroying the DME----even still, jumping a 944 is a 50-50 gamble.

I have no idea if my OEM flat spare even holds air or is dry rotted. 30 years hidden and ignored. The OEM air pump has never come out of the box. But I do know I have the exact air pressure and good tires on the car.

John
How do you properly jump a 944?
I've had to do it more times than I care to admit but just put the negative on the engine lift eye usually.

Spencer,

You are a 944 repair guru. Any method you choose is better than most.

I needed to move a parts car I gave to friend. I had one standard tire on an ugly, bent phone dial, and grabbed three inflatable spares from other parts cars, and all three inflated and held air as if new.

Unless the spare has been sitting outside in the Arizona sun, I wouldn't worry about using a spare.

I always bring my pit crew, flatbed trailer and a spare 944 with me just in case...

Actually, a spare DME relay, some tools, and a AAA Gold Card.

I have 100k on 944's and have only had one breakdown where I couldn't limp home. ---burst radiator hose --- one of the first things to get up to date on, after the infamous timing belt.

LOL, I have never used my spare - it is probably so rotted it probably wouldn't hold air! I have used the air pump once - to inflate an air mattress.

I went on a short trip to Indy this summer. Before I left, I went thru the car thoroughly. I do have fuses, a small tool kit and carried anti-freeze. The best tool you can bring is your cell phone.

I did fill my never used spare last summer and it maintained pressure for one week, then re-collapsed it.

...a old guy grooming a dream...a long trip, next month...but no current car really finished for 5k miles...so for my first time...water cooled, a cash buy that fits gal and golden in the back..and will go 5k miles.
So WTH do I pack?
So thanks folks for items list. And J AZ I do read owner manuals but show me one that says for "Chicago and return take a fuel pump, DME, some fuses and some tools"...more likely to say "Repairs for fuel management and timing sequence; suggest authorized dealer...see owners manual for list of author.....:
like I said thanks for a aircooled guy with stunted experience with liquid cars...it helps

AH! A 5000 mile trip in a ?????? 944, 951, 944S ?????....every previous post is air cooled, 356, 914, 911 .

An old water pumper 944 may never get you home without some idea of the inherent flaws.

I do not know how long you have owned the car you plan to use but I only know a new owner needs a Platinum AAA membership and a gold credit card for a 5000 mile trip.

Edit: Is this the "gals" car? If so, to over all of the past 5 years of maintenance done.
