Early vs Late Steering Column

I am working on an early to late dash swap in my 944. I need to put in a late ignition cylinder and mount, possibly even the whole steering column. In the early columns, there is a bearing mounted into the ignition cylinder assembly that centers the steering shaft in the column and supports this end (picture below). What does the late car use? If I removed the early ignition assembly, I was hoping maybe there is a bushing from a late car I could install? Otherwise, I will plan to obtain the whole column. It's just a pain with my LS3 and hydroboost brake system to remove the bolt holding the intermediate shaft, and I was hoping to avoid messing with the shear bolts.

Thanks!

Iirc later cars the shaft moved up a bit at the wheel end for leg clearance.

The shear bolts drill out easy enough.

That does make sense, it seems like with the early column and late gauges, the wheel blocks the view of the battery voltage gauge and whatever was on the left of the cluster.

I've read the actual mounting points for the early and late column are the same though, so I guess my best bet is to get the whole column.

Hi there superman! I am also doing exactly what you are proposing (and doing!), and that is fitting a later oval dash into a 924S. So, I am looking at your progress with interest. I did find this though, it might not be applicable as my car is a UK spec RHD. The later steering column has the fixing bracket in exactly the same place, but in the later dash cars the column was slightly offset.
Check this by fitting the dash and seeing exactly where the column sits with respect to the dash. If it is over slightly, then LHD cars have the same issue. If you don't do something about it, the column switch will not sit properly in the aperture, and the assorted plastic trims will not fit. I have gotten around the issue by creating slots in the column bracket to get the dimensions right. I now intend to weld a reinforcing plate into place to provide the necessary mechanical strength. Hope this info helps...keep up the good work!
