Question 928 Steering wheel - what fits?

My steering wheel needs recovering, looking at alternatives as well as recovering. Will any pre airbag 928 steering wheel fit any 928? Will any Porsche steering wheel fit, 924, 944, 911?

The 928 and the 914 share the same hub.

They also have hub adapters all over eBay if you want another type of wheel. I know a lot of 928's are using the 930 wheel as it does look real good in a 928.

I've got a dozen steering wheels I am working at getting recovered at reasonable prices, but still using Porsche quality leather. Its moving slowly though, but maybe in 3 or 4 months it will be rolling. Good sources available now are around $250 or so.

The splined thing that goes on the shaft of the steering column I believe is only attached to the steering wheel by 3 screws and can be swapped with other Porsche steering wheels to use them in a 928. Two steering wheels I like are the 930, which is just cool looking etc., and some of the 944 steering wheels that look like the 928 4 spoke, but are a slightly smaller diameter.

Danglerb,

The three screws just hold the horn contact ring on to the hub. The spline assembly is pressed into the wheel and isn't interchangeable. I wish they were though.

Have an original 928 wheel in excellent condition. $110 shipped in US.

There are a few different steering wheels on the 928. Pictures would solve the mystery.

I have both the three and 4 spoke and neither of them have removable spline receivers. I would love to be able to interchange them between the 928's and my 931.

Dennis, you just need to have a dual splined piece made to increase the spline on the 931 from its size upto the 928 size. Shouldnt be too hard to have made up.

Colin,

That sounds too simple. Wonder if epoxy would hold up since I have oversized tires and no power steering?

Pretty sure it can be done. I haven't done it, but I've had a couple old Porsche mechanics say it can be done, but weren't too specific on how, guessing ...

A) Press out the spline from one and press in the spline from the other.

B) 4 rivet looking things hold the whole back "tube" of the steering wheel to the front part, drill them out.

C) I have some extended steering wheels, and the extension bolts to what looks like the rear of a normal wheel.

Sniper,

Looks great....would look better with you in it blasting down Kruztown road again.
By the way, you missed a great breakfast today. We had five 928's show and six owners (one guy's Shark is down for repair). Great bunch of guys, lots of interesting stories. There were 3 S4's, one GTS and one 86.5 S present. Later, some of us took a run down I-95, but had to cut short the run up River Rd. to New Hope. Maybe next time. Hope you can make it.

Joe

P.S. I tried to call you but I must have your old number. You can call me sometime, if you want.

Sorry man, no chance i'll ever be attending a 9:00am get together. The only thing i do at 9:00am is sleep. My day starts at about noon.

Glad you guys all had a nice time though!

I'm PMing you with my number.

In this pic you can see the momo wheel with porsche horn button an the aftermarket VDO mechanical gauges i installed pretty well. The shifter is also momo(i don't like it at all- definitely not worth the $100+ bucks it cost)
