Transmission Plug (dumb mistake)!

Mada a rockie mistake. I am restoring an 89 S4 manual transmission. I had the rear end up to check my CV joints, while I was there I thought I would change the trans. fluid. This being my first manual trans, I assumed the cap on the side of the transmission was the fill plug. Well I removed the cap and unscrewed the threaded tube (about 2inch long), then I realized I should not have pulled this. I reinstalled it, but I think there may have been a back up on the tube which slide down upon my removing the tube (now at the bottom of the transmission case. Not sure what this part was, or what I need to do at this point. Is this a "no harm no foul", and I just reinstall the tube can cap?

15-13. it seemed to come out as one assembly, but now that I see your drawing it does look like there are parts on the inside. Looks like I will have to drop it and fix it. Do you know what the purpose of this access point is? Also a great drawing, nothing like what I have in the manual. Sure wish I had this up front.

Also, looks like If I drop the trans I can get access through the top cover plate. Might not be tooo bad, boy what a dumb engineer mistake, I kept asking myself "why in the world would they have engineered this this way. I was used to the Automated with the tank right there, didn't even think to use the back plugs.

Oil cooler return option?

Danglerb. could this have been a return line for an optional external oil cooler? This tube seems to dump out on top of the shaft. I can see no other purpose, why have access to the transmission with a threaded hollow tube that is capped off externally and dumps oil onto the center of the shaft? Perhaps a racing option? Just thinking this over and came up that that thought.

I just looked up what item 13 and 15 are in the diagram.

13
928.303.234.00
Arresting bush (3 recommended)

15
928.303.232.00
Detent

Sounds like its one of the things I pictured, just in another part.

Well found out that I removed the preselector spring. So I am pulling the trans. Which is really fine since I noticed the axle boots need replacing and I have a few other things to do under there. I thought I would have the trans checked at a shop, anyone know of a good 928 Transmission shop in Atlanta Georgia? Danglerb, really appreciate your help.

928 S4 trans fill

What is the best way to refill the auto trans in a garage with the car on jacks?

Start a new thread for the new topic...

In the meanwhile:

Find a small gear oil pump at the local parts place. Use it to pump ATF to the reservoir. I add a section of clear hose to the pump, so the pump and bottle are out from under the car. I add a plastic tie around the exhaust pipe to hold the hose in place. Pump until full. Start the car for a few seconds to let the pump refill the torque converter. Pump until full. Star the car for a few seconds. Pump until full. Repeat until starting the car no longer draws the level down too low. Leave the engine running while you top off the fluid to the cold level mark on the reservoir. Lower the car and go drive it a litte to get the trans up to temp. Recheck the fluid level at temperature and adjust as needed.

There's a thread archive of a RL post That gives the whole ATF swap and fill procedure in detail:

Fluid and Filter Change
