Here are Pros and Cons given below of Turbochargers 928:-

Pros: Significant increase in horsepower.

Cons: Turbo lag: turbochargers, especially large turbochargers, take time to spool up and provide useful boost.

You will always be slow in a 928. That's not what they are about. You can't play the hp game. A Ford Focus has 300hp now a days. The amount of money you need to compete is crazy. I have a 300hp Euro motor in my 928 and my Neon will smoke it. Save the money for power adders and just buy something faster if speed is your thing. But if you must go that route the only way I would force induce a 928 is to junk the old engine management and run a fully programmable unit like an Emtron. At least you will know you are getting everything out of your motor. Messing with antiquated technology isn't worth it when you doing something like this. Most 928 motors starting compression is too high to run any type of real boost. You'll need a good engine management just to keep it together.

Once you do that you have destroyed the value of the car in my opinion. As for gaining more power, it will take a lot of work and money. When done it's not going to be as fast as some of our new cars. I just drove a BMW sedan, 600 something I think. It took off like a jet, I mean really really fast and had large brakes. I was in a Z06 Vette, 640 HP with 7 speed auto trans. Pined me in the seat! A 30 year old 928 is not going to be close. As for smog testing, move here to Michigan, no testing, no smog!

What about new stuff? Older cars are exempt in NH, if there's not ODBII port to plug into you are free to go

No emissions testing here in Michigan that I know of. Never had to do any. I don't think Indiana has any, but Illinois does. Unfortunately, we have no fault insurance. They get you one way or another.

Parts of Indiana have emission testing and it starts at 1976 on up. And if your car predates OBDII, it gets to go on a dyno for testing.

The 928 was exempted from the last two dyno tests but still had to do the idle test. The test site manager said they couldn't take the risk of damaging the car and wouldn't even let their own employees drive it through the facility.

Also, the starting date of 1976 never changes.

I'm starting to hear rumors they may be doing away with the idiotic program. It's been a waste of time and tax money since FI became the standard over 25 years ago.
Personally, I'd like to see the sites repurposed for safety inspections like we had in the 70s.
Make people get rid of their eBay special headlight HID conversions and do something about rotted out exhausts, worn ball joints, loose steering, bald ass tires, worn shocks, metal to metal grinding brakes and rotted out frames.

OTH, there are a lot of Buicks with stock Eaton super chargers out there. The right person who knows what he's doing might be able to get through smog, since they're already CARB certified.

I've never had a complaint about my stock early motor, it was designed to match the other components on the vehicle.

frequently the catch with getting a swap through CARB is that the transmission may have elements considered part of the emissions control system, so all of it must be matched and swapped.

Bottom line though, I agree, want more power and faster, buy a car that does it already and save yourself a load of money and headache.
