Most of us have been there and done it wrong a few times. |
This weekend i will probably pull the injectors, because the lines need replacing anyways.I would be stupid to go that far and not pull the injectors to clean them.
What is coming out of the rails is clean, so i assume that the filter is fairly clean. Where would i check for the alarm to see if it has it or not? (the guy i got my 82 from said that it had an "after market" alarm on it (82) so i had never thought of the 83 having one. When i pull the injectors, will i need new "o" rings for the injectors? Think i can get them at the local parts store? Thanks!! |
Just send them to Witchhunter and they will hook you with new seals. "Always" replace seals whenever you yank Injectors out. Good practice and they are inexpensive.
Look at my $900 thread and you'll see the before after plus they include a spreadsheet of flowrate before and after. Plus they are Flowmatched. |
The injectors being sent out is a little expensive for these chevy types. I usually just put a small amount of Berrymans in the fuel tank. It keeps my cars running like loaded guns. What I'm saying is that if the fuel pump is running and the car isn't running with the jumper to the Jetronic and fuel pump, its probably a bad L-Jetronic brain. I also said that I messed around and opened the throttle until it ran more and more, then the injection relay fixed the engine.
Though I agree, it sounds like fuel pressure may be an issue, but didn't this thread start with a used fuel pump? I'll give you a hint there too. Ebay is a bunch of scamsters that sell bad used parts. Walbro makes a cheap fuel pump for the 928. Its $200 less than a Bosch and can be bought where chevy parts are sold. Not that I have one. I bought a new Bosch, but I don't cut corners on car repair either. |
Sorry, keep getting mixed up in these threads. I was thinking he had a 928 Engine in there. Either way, I would price out new versus cleaning versus sending them out. Although $20 per injector is very inexpensive for what they do to them.

To reiterate to 1982: the fuel injection jumper is a 3 prong jumper that connects terminal 30 to BOTH terminal 87's. If you look on the bottom side of the relay, the numbers will be molded into the plastic denoting which terminal is which. Just plug the jumper into the corresponding holes in the Central Fuse panel. Lfausty, Yes, he could send his injectors to Witch Hunter or Cruzin Performance. But we don't know 100% that is his issue, yet. I would wait until he gets it running and drives it a little bit before he jumps out there and spends THAT money. :) |

Everything on this car is original Porsche. No chevy parts in, or on it Thanks for the input, everyone! |
Well, the people i bought this from were "top rated sellers" and had 99.6% positive feedback rating.
What throws me is that i bought this pump for 60 and went and looked at my purchased items and it said "this item has been updated by it's seller" and it has gone up from 60 bucks to 299.99 Think they may have failed to put the right price with the auction? Glad that i didn't have to pay that much. |
I think MPDano was joking as I was joking. Was the fuel pump new or used?
|
The pump was new.

Okay now that we got that straight. If it has good fuel pressure, I say fuel injection next. Jumper the L-Jetronic on relay position 8, and see if the car will start and run. If not replace the Bosch L-Jetronic CPU. Then start from there. You will spend a liftime trying to fix this car by not refurbishing its basic running systems.
As I said the crash of the Bosch Jetronic CPU is a common problem. You might can have it repaired by somebody. |
I have the CPU and stuff off of the 82 that i could use if that happened to be dead.
Didnt work on the 928 tonight, my dad and i took the 944 to a show and just got home Does the jumper im going to make in the picture look correct? Thanks!! (sorry for my crude example. I hate microsoft paint.) Read back through the post and it appears that i did it correct for the fuel injection relay. Looks like it would be the same for the ignition. Or am i just a complete idiot and not realizing that the fuel injection relay is the ignition relay? because i dont see a "ignition relay" on the chart. When i think of the "ignition", i think of the car firing. (sorry for my stupidity) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311309404.jpg |
Yes, that is the injection relay. #8 on the top row.
I will build the jumper as soon as i find some wire and connectors. I dont see a need to jump the fuel pump relay, because the pump runs at all times when i have it running by pouring gas in it. Thanks for the help! |
I'm baffled as to why you are pouring gas in it if the fuel pump works? The fuel pump should be pumping adaquit fuel to start the car without pouring gas anywhere. Just let the fuel tank drain out into an oil changing pan, wash some new fuel through the tank while its unplugged, then put it all back together with the fuel pump intact from the fuel tank and put new fuel in it. You shouldn't have to be pouring gasoline anywhere.
|
Exactly, must have fuel pressure for the car to run. Good pump, good relay, good L Jetrnonic CPU, and a good CPU injection relay or jumper. Injectors may be clogged but mine werent after ten years in a junk yard.
|
alright.
Went out to clean the connections earlier, Took the ground wire off of the valve cover (one closest to the firewall) I heard something behind me and looked back to see a raccoon looking at me and went to work taking the other ground wire off. I went inside for a drink (15 minutes) and came back out to see that the damn raccoon stole every tool that i had set on the car... Got another ratchet and 10mm socket and cleaned both of those grounds. Jumpered the fuel injection relay. The engine did the same as it was before. (before i started working, i tried to start it and it would start and run for a few seconds. Guess the carb cleaner i put in the tank is sort of working) Rented a injector test light to see if it was getting any power to it. After it started, the light would stay on, and not shut off until the car died. So its not pulsing the fuel. To see if the jetronic was doing anything at all, i unhooked it and it did the same exact thing as when it was hooked up. Either the CPU is dead, or something is not allowing it to work. Tomorrow i will get the CPU off of the 82 and see if that fixes it. |
alright, this is what it was doing.
The first start is with the CPU unhooked. The second is with it hooked up. Battery was starting to get a bit weak. Its on the charger now. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1m-mq_YggO8?hl=en&fs=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Engine sounds very good/
Did you jumper the alarm, btw? |
Well, i guess i should figure out if it has one first.
