Congrats on the new addition! And the fuel line!

man_knee 06-04-2012 06:44 AM

Thanks for the congrats guys! Well we made some progress over the weekend, but not running yet. The big thing is that the fuel line is in and all the odds and ends under the car have been buttoned back up. Like all things, it didn't run as smoothly as it did in my mind, but nevertheless, it's in and fuel can now be delivered once more. I lost a day on Saturday to help my brother-in-law build a shed, then after some yard work yesterday, by the time I got line in and situated, it was getting pretty late. There are still two or three loose ends that need tying before I start her, but those are pretty trivial so a start at some point this week is certainly in the cards.

Once it's running, the first thing I have to do is change the trans fluid. I have the 4-sp kit, are there any good how-to write-ups you guys could point me to? My workshop manuals are on a laptop that's having issues at the moment.

[QUOTE=MPDano;6771955]I just bought a long piece of 45mm or 1-3/4" ID Silicone Hose and cut it to length (around 2"). Example in this eBay auction. 1 piece will make 5 couplers. You need 8 so buy 2.

where did you get the new intakes that hook up to the filter box and silicone coupler ? i am assuming those are not stock, i took mine off and it is ratty, def could use new ones..

Silicone Straight Hose coupler 45mm 1.75" inch x 50mm long Red Coupler Connector | eBay

^^^^^^^^^^ will this length work 55m? 1.75 inch for the coupler on the spider

thanks in advance -

Update: Frustratingly, the thing didn't start. More frustrating is the reason why. The fuel line saga continues...so I got everything buttoned up, got some odds n ends taken care of, tossed a couple gallons of premium in and put the battery back in. Battery was out so long, it was shot. So attached some cables and let it sit for a while. Turned the key to the on position and did a lap around the car to check for leaks. So far so good. Gave it a go, got a crank or two, then clicks. So I let the battery charge a little longer. Tried again, cranks a little longer, no start. Kept the battery hooked up longer, crank no start. It went like that for a little while until it got late enough where I figured I'd hang it up till tomorrow. So I disconnected the cables, parked the other car and started cleaning up. That's when I heard it. Drip.......drip..........drip........drip. I start looking for the source and get a nice whiff of 93 octane. Sure enough, where the line was cut to connect the hose is leaking where the fittings attach. It's too late here to mess with it now, I got a bucket collecting it up. I'm guessing it's either 1) just not tight enough, or more likely 2) the flare isn't quite right. I have an OEM flare tool and used the 3/8". The line is actually 10mm but it didn't seem to be a problem. The only thing is it doesn't flare the end the same as it originally was. Any thoughts?

man_knee 06-05-2012 08:05 PM

Now that I'm looking at some things, it looks like the original flare was a bubble flare, where the tool that I have only does a single flare, that may be my problem. I think I'll pick up a metric bubble flaring tool to make sure I put this fuel line beast to bed once and for all.

I haven't installed mine yet, because I plan on Powder Coating my spider this Winter, and I'll install the new couplers after the spider is painted.

man_knee 06-08-2012 06:41 AM

So today might be the day! Yesterday after work I yanked the line back out, cut a few inches off and after a couple practice runs on previously cut sections of the line, I reflared the end using a metric bubble flare tool. It didn't flare as large as the factory flare, but it looked good. I put the line back in, snugged the fitting up good and tight, buttoned up the undercarriage and gave it a crank. Still no start, but no more leak either. When I get home later, I'm gonna hook the battery up for a good-long time and give it a shot of starter fluid which will hopefully do the trick.

Since pretty much the entire fuel system was drained of all fuel during this process, is there anything special that needs to be done to get it recirculate, or should it be firing up at this point?

MPDano 06-08-2012 07:12 AM

Fuel, Spark "and" on time, it should run. Pop, etc, will be timing.

man_knee 06-08-2012 07:38 AM

OK, we'll see what happens. I shall report back later on.

man_knee 06-08-2012 04:46 PM

Starter fluid didn't work. Pulled a plug wire and stuck in a spare spark plug, set it on the intake and looked through the windshield while I cranked it. Definitely spark, didn't look overly strong but since I've never checked a spark before, I have no basis for comparison. I get some putts and exhaust out the back so I'm not really sure what the deal is. I didn't do anything with regard to the TB or distributor so I can't see how the timing would be off. Thoughts?

man_knee 06-09-2012 06:51 PM

IT'S ALIVE!!! As usual, Leo was 100% correct. Fuel, spark and TIMING. The more I thought about it, I realized when I went to put the #5 intake pipe back on, I loosened the distributor to gain better access. In doing so, I apparently moved it enough to knock the rotor one notch out of sync. Tonight I went in and put the engine to TDC and popped the distributor cap. Sure enough we were out of line. So I put it back to 1, put the cap back on, hooked up the wires, got in, gave the key a turn and....

What a great sound to hear her roar again. Still got plenty to go, but I'm declaring victory tonight. Thanks for all the help so far everybody!

AirtekHVAC 06-09-2012 07:16 PM

Yay!!!!

MPDano 06-09-2012 10:11 PM

Sounds of Joy! Congrats!!

man_knee 06-10-2012 10:40 AM

Thanks guys! Put the tires on and dropped her today so I could back her out and do some much needed garage clean up. We're not out of the woods yet. When I give it some gas, I get some stuttering instead of a clean roar. There's also a little smoke coming up from the underbelly on the drivers side. I'm pretty certain I'm leaking power steering fluid so maybe it's just stuff burning off. It did feel good to sit behind the wheel again, even it was just out and in of the garage. Any ideas on the stutter or smoke?

1982_928 06-10-2012 11:24 AM

It probably still has some trash in the injectors or something. If you havent already, dump some seafoam in the tank. Also, since its been sitting a while, pour some seafoam in the crankcase too. It helps lube stuff up (Also fixed a nasty lifter tick in the 944)

As for the leaking power steering fluid.. Get some of the power steering stop leak stuff. I cant remember exactly what it was called, but im pretty sure its STP. It fixed the PS leak in my superbee, chevelle, camaro, 280zx,my dads 944, ect.... I have had damn good luck with it.

The smoke may also just be some oil (Or PS fluid) on the exhaust manifold..

man_knee 06-11-2012 06:35 AM

I'll pick up some seafoam and the ps leak stuff today and see how it goes. So I would pour the seafoam right into the oil reservoir? Apologies for my ignorance, my first time around the block with a lot of this stuff.

The PS may be another monster. I definitely need to drain what's in there and put fresh ATF in. The stuff that's in there now is brown and disgusting. The hoses coming from the bottom of the reservoir have crap caked all over them. While I'm at it, I'll clean up as much of the underbelly as I can so I can see what exactly is leaking and from where, and also see where the smoke is coming from. I've been pretty lack on the pics lately, so I'll be sure to get back on those. Thanks!

Freaking sweet man!!!! Glad to hear that thing is finally running! I can't wait till I can fire mine up for the first time. But that will be a few months. Maybe even into the winter as I am currently buying a motorcycle from my parents. But once that is paid off the Porsche is next.

Thanks! Congrats on the bike, that's on my list of things to own, but I need to get over the wife hurdle there. She's pretty anti-motorcycle, so that'll be one of those 'just do it/better to beg forgiveness than ask permission' situations. The car is coming along slow but sure. I'll keep the updates coming.

MPDano 06-11-2012 08:40 AM

Yeah, just run the heck out of it. Just monitor your temps. Hesitating can be a lean mixture, not getting enough fuel so it chokes. A little smoke from the engine compartment is probably oil residue burning off. If you can pinpoint exactly where it's coming from, make sure to monitor that area. I used Engine degreaser on the "lower" portion of my engine and sprayed water from the bottom. Avoid spraying on top as there are too many electricals that can get ruined. Especially the harness which is normally cracked up due to age and hardening.
