Small wonders of the modern world
Though it isn't late November, I'd like to pause to give thanks:
1. For less than four bucks, I can get a gallon of miraculous fluid that will push 3,000 lbs of expensive German metal on wheels 15 or 20 miles down the road - and my fat ass doesn't even have to push. 2. At 7:30 pm on a Saturday night, I can drive to Advance Auto and get correct o-rings for the Bosch injectors on my 1986 Porsche 928. Back story on #2 there - since I had done all the resurrection work on my 928, it has been smelling gassy. Assuming it was something to do with the tank sealing and was just vapor, I didn't sweat it and added it to the list. While doing a big ignition overhaul last Saturday (plugs, wires/ends, rotors, caps), I happened to notice the gassy smell under the hood (uh oh) and that my #1 injector was wet. Weak sauce! I pulled the rail and sure enough, the o-ring had a neat, thin little slice taken out of it. Damnit....I must have bodged the install when I got 'em back from Witchhunter. But no kidding, the first parts store I called had 'em in stock. I bought enough to redo the whole rail. I'm sure that same injector seal has about 500 different applications other than the 928, but I still thought it was awesome.

I was sold as soon as I knew where to get a cheeseburger 24/7 (yipes, now thinking about in/out).
OTOH filling a 23.5 gallon tank is shortly going to cost $100. |

when you refit the O rings use Dow Corning 111 on the O rings this will keep them soft and they slide into the rails easily

I had the shark back on the road that night! On installing fresh o-rings on that rail, I used Permatex dielectric grease. Also silicone based, like Dow Corning 111.

I had to repair my fuel injector hoses on the right bank of my '84 928 last saturday night. It was fun and easy. I had it back together and drove it in about an hour.

Harvey's Silicone grease: Silicone Grease is a 90% pure silicone product which contains no petroleum additives and offers greater heat resistance, up to 450°F., than lithium based greases. Non-staining and odor-free. Apply to rubber and synthetic “O” rings. If you sell “O” rings...you need this product!
From a plumbing supply. Less than $2.00 Is Corning 111 fuel resistant? OR maybe that is not important

Any of that silicone makes it to the o2 sensor, plan on replacing it. Silicone even in TINY amounts poisons the sensor.

That's a good point. What would you use?
If one lubed the O ring only and carefully just to assist install; that is how I might do it. Not certain how much silicone would actually process thru combustion. OR would soapy water be OK?

Checked back on my old notes and seems like many use silicone grease, but I think safer and more commonly used lubes are Vaseline, motor oil, and lithium grease. There also may be a specific type of silicone grease that is o2 sensor safe, but didn't find it in google shopping.

canister in pass wheel well can have rotted lines and or canister itself -- vapors woof stinks up the cabin with broken/rotted lines there vs it going passed the cabin and out there coming right into the cabin area. *forget but more noticeable not at idle /startup but driving and shifting down around 3rd to 2nd most strong ,like unburned fuel, canister lines seemed to fix it or helped. Got me thinking other underlying areas have to watch/smell for. Drive fast, no prob. lol

Its good that your pointing out the silicone contamination idea,
HOWEVER its impossible for the silicone to get to the sensor, simply rub it onto the injector seals and insert them, I have never seen any silicon contamination of the cats in all the years i have been using this DC111.

I would be concerned with petroleum products and O-rings. Except for Vaseline, grease/oil products are not recommended on rubber products; it soften neoprene/rubber. As I provided, the Harvey's brand 90% silicone is very similar to Corning111, it is available in the plumbing depts as "plumbers grease" and is fairly inexpensive. In small amounts, enough to lube an O-ring it should work. It might even work for the fuel hose/barb connection altho I like the hot water, mico'd in a thermal mug, the best.
