928 no speedo, battery, fuel, etc.
I have a '82 928...the RPM work, but the speedometer, fuel gauge, battery gauge, etc. doesn't work. Any suggestions what to look for or do?
thanks in advance... |

It's probably the connections to the speedo cluster. There are three plug in connections to the cluster. You will have to pull the binnacle, and check the plugs. If they are plugged in, you might need to clean the contacts where they plug in. Sometimes the speed sensor goes out or gets dirty. It clips onto the very rear of the transmission with a screw and a pin. Usually that is the problem when ONLY the speedometer doesn't work. When one side of your cluster goes out, it's usually a bad connection to the cluster. The fuel guage is probably the electronics that connect into the fuel tank or the fuel level sending unit inside the tank. They are accessed under the rear carpet in the back glass. The cover is right on top of the fuel tank. There is a connector that plugs in under a fiberglass sheet directly under the carpet.

Plan on cleaning contacts, ground points, etc. If it hasn't been regularly, its needs to be done.

Here, check this thread. Many don't like my scalpel method but everything on my Instrument Cluster works.

Bad speedo connections are the main reason I think its still possible to find low mileage 928's.
Sensor can apparently fail back in the tranny (not really sure about this being common). 4 pin connector in the top front of the spare tire well needs cleaning. Pins on the pod connection fingers need cleaning. Ground points need cleaning. Flexible circuit boards need replacement and/or cleaning and/or resoldering. Fuse Alan mentions above. Assuming all electrical works, a gear in the odometer commonly fails. |

Davetr, The speedo not working is either the sensor on the very rear of the transmission that may just be dirty or loose. Next try the connector just in front of the spare in the right corner of the spare tire compartment. If not fixed it's the speedo connections, or the speedo itself. That connects the sensor to the trans. The fuel guage is the sending unit that I explained above unless it's the combination of that and other contacts. The fact that you said it worked for a second kinda says it's the rear trans sensor. At least in my experience it does.
