Lost fuel tank or mind

Sometimes I am not "real" organized, but last week I reached a new level, I can't find my spare fuel tank. I've been looking through my "stuff" for a couple weeks now, drove out and checked my storage unit today, and searched all my old emails for clues tonight. Best I can figure is that I did "something" with it Jan/2010, which could have been putting it in my black car, but I don't recall what etc. Getting old is such fun.

When I last messed with the fuel tank on my US 83 some part of my install wasn't right, maybe too thick of replacement foam on the support, something binding, not clear what, but its cracked at the curved part of the support on the bottom and is leaking. Crack is at a stress point where a patch I think would be pointless, at least it seemed that way when I would sure I had a spare tank around someplace.

Looks like Monday morning I am shopping for a fuel tank, thinking seriously of skipping directly to a new tank, instead of messing with finding, checking, cleaning a used one.

I lost an elephant once,
turns out the circus came to town and stole the show...

Interesting about your fuel leak,
I just replaced a tank a few weeks ago that had a crack by the lower girdle support,
a used tank from 928 INTL cured the issue

Lost things?

I lost a bolt from a exhaust support yesterday during a 150 mile drive in SD county. Found the bracket arm and rubber mount sitting in the valley on the 2 ornamental tailpipe end pieces when I got home.

GF asks, honey, what are these things dong here? After I pulled into the garage. Hmmm.

Stopped by 928Intl Friday, they have two early tanks, and one 80+ badly needing cleaning, which makes that option not so appealing.

I though they had a handy dandy cleaning machine on site.

They send them out to I think the same guy that does the radiator repairs. Mark has a parts washer, but not much good on inside stuff, or something as large and odd shaped as the fuel tank. If I can't find a decent used tank that will clean up for a total of around $200, I think I am going to buy a new one.

I couldn't keep the 83 at home with a leaking tank, so I dropped it at Devitos the day before I left for Alaska, and its starting to wear out its welcome, so I may need to decide tomorrow.

My thought is the factory tank is good for 20 to 30 years, so its a bit nuts to buy a 20 year old one if you plan to keep the car. OTOH issues with the tank are pretty obvious, and the tank swap isn't a huge chore, so if I can find one cheap, I'm on it.

If I was going to keep a car then a new one makes a whole lot of sense.

I bought a 928 intl used rad since I am not sure if I will keep my car.

You could try,

Valley Auto Salvage, Inc. USA-CA(San-Jacinto) 1-951-925-0595

They have a 1980 for $100 (But they do not give a grade or have a picture)

Have you priced a new tank? What do they cost?

I can relate to your dillema. I have tons of parts stored in boxes all around. On more than one occasion I've had to purchase a part that I was sure that I had but couldn't find. only to have it turn up later.

Yikes, reminds me of a new radiator @ $799.00.

Funny - 3 more parts cars.....after reading your threads, I am sure that is very true. 3 more parts cars that might run also.

3 more parts cars, average life of tank left in them 0-5 years, value of tanks = 0 to 1/3 of a new tank, new tank is the better value. 3 weeks is the bigger issue.

danglerb - i have one in denver pulled out of a 79 - i had to drain gas out of it so i don't think it leaks but it hasn't been tested - it's just sitting around taking up room - not sure what shipping would be or even who to ship with - how does $75 plus shipping sound

78/79 tank is a different style, doesn't work (have all the needed fittings) in newer cars.

I finally made it out to San Jacinto and picked up the tank, nice guys at Valley Auto Salvage. Tank very dirty on the outside, but still had some gas in it, so hoping it won't take much to clean it up. Thanks for the tip JB.

They had two what looked like 1980 models, some ok body panels left on them, and some glass, but not much else. If I were local I might offer them a deal like call me before you crush it and pop every bit you can off it for some flat fee like $100 or something. OTOH the cars looked fairly gleaned already I'm guessing by the old owner before selling them to the yard. None of the easy to remove locks left, but one I think still had ign and key on the floor. Junk inside both cars, and lots of spider web, so only way to touch it would be with some mondo gloves and pull everything out to whats in it.

The catch I guess is cutting deal that the yard would be OK with, prices on stuff you don't really need have to be plenty less than normal, but still worth their time to deal with you etc.
