The 2 after the 8 means something, I think it was 0,1,2 US, Euro, something, forget which and it changed later.

I just saw this post and thought I would reply. The 2 after the 8 means it was exported to the USA/Japan. If it were a 1, it would mean Europe/ROW (rest of world).
I have serial number 9288200072 and signed up for Autocheck to get a vehicle history report for my car. When I was signed up, I also queried the database for all serial numbers between 00001 and 00080 just to see what information was available. Autocheck cut me off after the 00080 as I had run up against the maximum numbers I could query. There were no records for 9288200030 - I found records for #28, #29 and #35,#36 but nothing in between. The oldest information in any of the records I found was 1987, so I assume that was around the time they started getting automated information. I was hoping I could send you the autocheck for your car, but there wasn't one when I queried that number. Rick

Hi Rick,
Did you query both RoW and US VINs? The numbers you listed are US serial numbers, right? Thanks!

Jim - I only queried US VINS. My plan was to also do the ROW's, but was not allowed to query more.

I paid $45 for a one month unlimited license - if you just want one report it is $29.
You can easily check if AutoCheck.com has any records for your car by entering your serial number on this page. The system only supports 17 digit serial numbers, but if you enter 7 spaces before your "928--------" serial number. If they have any records, they will tell you. If they do not, they will indicate you entered an invalid VIN. For example, my serial number shows there are records on file: 9288200072 For Ron's car, it cannot find any: 9288200030 So you can at least check if there is something there before spending any money. Jim - I tried checking for your serial numbers 11 and 16. There were no records for 11, but some did turn up for 16.
9288100016 Might be worth buying. I will pm you what my report looks like so you can see if it is worthwhile. Rick

Looks like the links I posted have timed out so you should type the serial # (preceded by 7 blanks) into this link AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports Homepage

Interesting fellas.... RoW S/N's 0011, 0012, 0013, 0014, 0016, 0024, 0027, 0029, 0034, 0042 are somewhere in the US.
I know where 0011, 0016, 0029 & 0034 are. The others are wide open and waiting to be found. Have fun! ![]()

Since I am unsuccessful with getting PET to run under WIN7 x64 (XP Mode), maybe someone could check the VIN of my '80 for me? It's 92A0811059
Much appreciated, Marcus |

Have you tried doing a google of some of the low serial numbers to see if they have been discussed etc? Might be some data worth mining there.

So far google has no info using (92881000xx Porsche), doesn't help early vin matches both phone numbers and some zip code in Arizona (forcing me to include Porsche as keyword which might exclude some pure vin mention), except for:
9288100028 some discussion on RL related to a found owners manual, not car, but includes early car discussion in general. 9288100034 is Rixter's car the new old girl on the block - Rennlist Discussion Forums 9288100035 is mentioned without any details, a side reference, as the first AT. 9288100039 is Otto's in Germany, possibly owned by Ferry Porsche, discussion Number 00039 Prototype ? - Rennlist Discussion Forums 9288100040 side note only in 039 discussion. 9288100051 side note only, once thought prior vin were preproduction. 9288100054 is part number for a fuel line dist. many hits none vin 9288100055 is another part, no vin. 9288100057 side mention in discussion of 9288200057 regards USA vs ROW vin. 9288100068 for sale now in Finland. 9288100100 another part number. last I checked in ROW sequence, 92882 is USA/CAN. 9288200001 Lots of hits as it was published as the start of the vin sequence, which is now known to be 011 with the first 10 reserved for never sold prototypes. 9288200011 no car, lots of hits due to "real" start of vin sequence for USA/CAN. 9288200013 no car, side note in vin discussion regards sales in USA during 1977. 9288200016 Now in Finland, picts of very nice car and discussion Very early '78 model year US model - Rennlist Discussion Forums to be cont. In 2010 I ran autochecks on the first 80 numbers of the 9282 series
and have the reports for the following numbers where there was some information. Below you can see the date/location of the first and last records from the reports. Code:
