Glad the car os coming together for you, Brian.
Nice repair on the cruise control, mine works the same as yours, don't remember if I saved the cruise control out of the 78. It's the control box mounted in the console, right? If you have a picture or number, that would help me locate it in my mountain of unorganized parts in the shed. Thank you, Brian. |

well brian here's a picture but before we all celebrate the repair I have to report that yesterday the cruise did not work..?? - no response to controls at all - so it seems I have more fixin to do - the part number on it is 928.617.127.00 - seems the same part was used for everything up to 86 or so - the black rectangular box on the left side in the picture is a relay - that is where I discovered a break in the solder - could be a common weak spot - that's where i'll start looking again - I guess cruise is not that important right now but if I ever go on a long drive in this i'd want it to work - plus I just like it when things work correctly

Thank you, Brian.
I'll check and see if I have one. Like you say, it would just be nice if it worked. Brian. |

well I still don't have a working cruise control - but I've put that aside for now - a system I REALLY would like to get working is the windshield washer - been pretty messy here with snow and now rain and we get a lot of splashback from the car in front - so I went at that yesterday - none of the washers have ever worked so I was thinking something electrical would be the problem - checked for juice at all the pumps... nothing there - then I realized I was checking the wrong pumps for the different systems (intensive, headlights, windshield) - I was thinking the pump up under the front bumper was the headlight one so when I pushed the stalk forward of course I got no power there - now I have power to the intensive pump and the headlight pump - they were both stuck but I used the reverse polarity trick (thanks to whoever posted that) a few times and they did loosen up - still haven't gotten to the windshield pump - is it better to go at that from underneath the car? - I tried to put washer fluid in it but it was full - anyway I thought i'd remove and rinse out the reservoir - so what do I find? yea it was full.....of coolant - evidently a PO had mistook the washer fill for the coolant fill - pulled out about 1.5 gallons of very clear and fresh looking coolant - I put water in and while the two working pumps do indeed pump, there are cracks in the hoses so water just dripped from various places underneath the car - hoses are next - I also repaired the front spoiler with a backing plate and flexible bumper repair putty - these can't be plastic welded but the center grill vertical pieces can - so the spoiler is on and looks great - I also removed the a/c compressor to see if I can rebuild that (getting warm with black interior) - more on that as I go

Chin spoiler looks good!
Did the same type of repair and it has held together nicely. Black shoe polish works great for adding color. Have you been logging very many miles? Brian. |

thanks brian - I actually wound up painting the spoiler with a can of plastic paint - it may have been painted before as it was a chalky white - or that could have been sun damage - this type of repair should hold ..at least until I rip it off on a curb or something - it's so close to the ground I've already kissed a parking stop with it - little scrapes easily touched up with paint - so far I've driven about 400 miles - no problems other than the brake pad warning popping up sometimes when I hit a bump - all the wires for them are cut and tied together - I have replacement sensors but haven't gotten around to putting them on yet - this car drives very nice - the shifting is a little notchy - synchros are worn but no actual grinding - swapping in the 86 tranny is on the horizon - going to go up to the hills soon and see how it does on curvy roads - got the a/c compressor completely disassembled - going to try to get that back together today

finally got around to rebuilding the a/c compressor - while I was there I did the air pump also - both were actually much easier than I anticipated - I didn't want to spend big $$'s on the a/c so I did a homemade repair on the rubber lines - it's sort of the same as replacing the rubber fuel lines where you cut off the metal ferrule clamp and reuse the fittings with new hoses - the hoses were readily available online - all three sizes shipped were $19 - instead of standard hose clamps I used T bolt clamps - these can really be torqued down - I both pressurized and vacuumed the system checking for leaks - found none - I believe it calls for 37 ounces of r12 so I figured about 30 ounces of r134 - I may have over charged it a bit as there seems to be hardly any left in the third 12 ounce can - fired it up and it does cool but i'm unimpressed with the output - it's about 92 here in Denver today and I just got back from a little ride - the vent temps were down to around 45 degrees while idling in the shade - I don't know if these cars can do better but I was expecting it to be like a meat locker - while driving in the sun the cooling seems to be pretty anemic - maybe window tint would help - do these cars have great a/c systems or was I expecting too much? - I was wondering why Porsche offered a rear a/c in what seems to be a pretty small car - might try pulling a little of the charge out and seeing if that has any effect - does the electric fan run constantly while a/c is on? - it's a major current draw and the charging needle barely makes it to 12 volts (normally up around 13.5) - also I don't have the sensor hooked to the alternator intake yet - actually the sensor is hooked up but the tube is just tucked up in the fender - could this affect a/c temps? - thanks in advance for the answers if you have any

Check at the battery with a DVM for voltage readings, the gauge is very unreliable...especially under load or if you have never cleaned all of your ground cables or replaced. I've had mine drop to 12V's with A/C on, but when checked with a meter...it is 13.6 volts. Quote:

hey deputy - thanks for the answers - could you take a picture of the mats I sent you so I can show the folks a Lloyds what i'm looking for (see my floor mats post) - thanks - I hooked the sensor hose up to the alternator intake and also installed the lower fan shroud - that should help with cooling the condenser - yea I figured there's a lot of outside influences on the a/c - i'm just comparing it to the more modern cars I have now (2002 van.. modern? ) - this is not as good as the van - I just was thinking a V-8 would be blowing the coldest air - i'll tinker with it some more - car is just about done - still no cruise though

haven't posted in a while - got the mat situation straightened out - the air is cold but not really impressive - I think this car is about as far restored as I can take it - I never did get the cruise to operate correctly and that is something i want - also the climate control doesn't seem to be working correctly as it will never turn the a/c on unless the button is pushed - i'm thinking when the temp is set to 65 it would turn the a/c on automatically but I may be wrong - I don't know what these two items are - one is from the 79, the other from the 84 - anybody know where they go - I've been driving the car pretty much daily - it drives very nice - shifts ok but the synchros are a little notchy - I have an 86 limited slip I can swap in - maybe next spring - I would like to thank everyone again for their advice and help

Those rubber pieces are scuff plates that mount vertically against the bell housing tunnel to keep your toes from wearing the carpet in that area.

thanks stepson - that's the problem with taking 2 years to restore this - I forget where some things go and I forget where I put some things - i'll see if I can find the mounting holes behind the carpet
