Remove center vent with care, use plastic trim removal tool or similar. (available @ auto body supply)
Pull off center console cover starting from the top, very delicate sides and tricky imo, will break so go slow!!
unscrew and remove push button plate.
Unscrew both the glove box under tray and console side trim to access radio mounts if necessary. (WSM instruction)

Push in the radio assembly tool to unlock and and slide the radio out.

these are modified WSM instructions, hope they help.

I had to remove the side panels to get at the wiring when I replaced my radio.

Early radios had two parts. The head unit in the front, and buried in the dash, the amplifier (?) unit that it plugs into. If you want both parts out, you'll need to take off at least one of the panels on the side. If you want to repair the original radio, I would take them both out. There's also the amplifier under the carpeted cover next to the passenger door. Be careful not to reset the Oxygen sensor counter (I pushed the button, not knowing what it was).

Not worth repairing the original radio. Pull it, save it and put in one that is up to date with all the goodies. If you sell the car, then new owner can fix/install the old radio if he wishes, but why??? Some things just need to be put on the shelf. I mean does anyone listen to a spark gap transmitter in Morse Code!

Nonsense! Put in what you like NOW and enjoy or live in the past! I have my old Blau in a box and no tapes to put in it nor would I even think of it. I drive my car every day and I could care less of worrying about such things. My new JVC sounds way, way, way superior and it even answers my cell phone!

Call me old fashioned, but I am looking for an original radio for my 78. If anyone has one, pm me. I am trying to bring my car back to original condition and a correct radio would be great.

Why bother even storing? Who really seriously would want to play cassettes? crap sound, cumbersome track changing, gone the way of 78 records, even CD's are history, I read recently that Sony was not going to produce CD players any more, flash drives hold 1000's of tracks, players have no moving parts,V CD, 20 tracks.
21st century technology, YES!

Usually you get a wiring harness with the new radio. Yes, some cutting and splicing will need to be done. I cut and trim wires, slip on the right size shrink tubing, solder the connection and slide tubing over joint and heat shrink. You may need to run new speaker wires for 4 ch. configuration + sub woofer.

Not to mention tape getting stuck inside radio, pull it out and tape all messed up! I mean we don't send Telegrams any more do we? Updated radio is the way to go.
